Re: Lombardini 440cc Common Rail Concept
Not necessarily. Unfortunately, for industrial engines like those popular here, full-load numbers are usually the only ones given. At lower load, the Z482 may well be either less or more efficient. Also, the Z482 may be overall more efficient even at full load but lower RPM, looking at the curve sha...

Re: Lombardini 440cc Common Rail Concept
Brake specific fuel consumption. Basically, this engine burns 290 grams of fuel per kWh at 2300 rpm at full load. Compare to a Kubota Z482, which burns 260 grams of fuel per kWh at 2200 RPM. And the Z482 is indirect injection, even, which is typically less efficient. Or a Yanmar L100N, which is airc...

Re: Lombardini 440cc Common Rail Concept
I'll note that the engine's specs are quite unimpressive.
Like, BSFCs that a gasser can easily beat. Like, best case, 290 g/kWh at 2300 RPM (PDF page 18).
If you're gonna have BSFCs that bad, you might as well run a gasser, and get lighter weight and far lower cost.

So, over on 'BentRider Online, someone posted a link to a Hatz diesel-powered Quest velomobile: http://www.bentrideronline.com/messageboard/showpost.php?p=1099605&postcount=160 That got me thinking about how bicycle components could be used to build a motorized vehicle around a small engine. Roh...

Re: 3800RPM + ???
The problem is that most production small-displacement IDI engines are meant for generator applications, and aren't built to take high RPM. Also, IDI engines are almost always watercooled, which is something that single-cylinder engines tend to avoid. Not a bad thing, but something to consider. (IDI...

Re: Where to Purchase Engines Online
Hmm, I'm not convinced that a 360 degree twin is the way to go - the MD150 that I bought for a project is pretty smooth from 1000 to 3000 RPM, and that's a 180 degree twin. The 180 degree twin does have a rocking couple that the 360 doesn't have, and the power pulse is more of a big bang, but you do...

Re: 2Deuce is a noob
Might want to check the MD150 service manual, by the way. The RPM setting is one screw, and I'm not 100% certain, but fairly certain that all the engine internals are the same between the MD150 and 151.
I'll be turning my MD150 (I got one last week) up to 3600 RPM, if not 4000.

Ruggerini MD - how to see whether one has variable timing?
Found a potential MD151 for a project that I want to do (not a BIKE, but a three-wheeler), and am wondering how I can tell whether it has the variable advance injection pumps. Any obvious clues on the engine? It looks like it might have a taper shaft, though, which means it probably won't be what I ...

Re: 3800RPM + ???
This engine tune doesn't actually exist, but I believe it's possible, using parts that already exist (with the possible exception of the injection pump, but really, that'll just affect emissions.) I'm using both stock and modified figures. I don't have a weight figure, though. Modified figures are s...

Re: 3800RPM + ???
A lot of engines are rated for a max RPM of 3800, but I suspect that engines that have their power peak at 3800+ are more interesting. That Yanmar D27 looks very, very interesting, although I do see a couple issues with it, namely: Direct seawater cooling - might be possible to work around that, tho...

Re: Another 2 Stroke Diesel Bike
A 2-stroke diesel can be crankcase-scavenged, just like a 2-stroke gasoline engine. The downside to that approach is that lubrication is more complex than on a blower-scavenged 2-stroke diesel or a 2-stroke gasoline engine, and usually involves directly delivering oil to the points that require lubr...

Trading Standards is governmental, and therefore has power, the BBB is not, and therefore can only drag a company's name through the mud, there's no actual legal recourse the BBB has.
State Attorneys General are the closest thing that we have to Trading Standards, I'd say.

Re: What needs to change to make Yanmar L engines do high RPM?
Yeah, that's one side of the problem - getting the torque curve to not fall off, while keeping it usable at low RPM, without ending up redesigning the whole thing. (The other side is the mechanical integrity of the engine, when it was never designed to really exceed 3600 under a load, and maintainin...

Re: What needs to change to make Yanmar L engines do high RPM?
To be honest with you.... and maybe this is for another thread... but why the need for increased RPM. Isn't it more logical to go with completely different gearing to go along with the inherint nature of the diesel engine? I dont know much about all this but I suspect Petrol bikes developed into RP...

Re: New Diesel Motorcycle Engine being tested
An engine designed specifically for motorcycles could be very interesting. I wonder if a prechamber engine could meet emissions standards. If so, a 5000 RPM power peak is doable, and 18 hp is realistic. (Direct injection needs very high cetane fuels to do high RPM, and swirl chamber isn't as good as...

Something worth noting is that that fuel economy is only on the (11 km) NEDC cycle, on a fully-charged battery.
Discharged, based on the range estimates, the actual fuel economy is more like 1.94 L/100 km.

Re: What needs to change to make Yanmar L engines do high RPM?
Hmm, looking at how the injection system works, I wonder if some sort of cam phasing system could be done. The problem would be phasing just the injection lobe, and not the intake or exhaust lobes, but if you can pass that hurdle, it could be phased off of the governor, so fully mechanically...

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the computer. A good chiptuner can remove the requirement for it to be married to the instrument cluster, and then you're good to go. (Or, just go for a 99 or older TDI.) The issues you're going to have, I think, will be related to packaging and gearboxes. You'll bas...

And even with an airbag jacket, you're far less safe in a motorcycle than in a mass-produced small car.
And even in that mass-produced small car, you're far less safe than you'd be in a giant SUV.
So, let's all drive giant SUVs.

indirect diesels tend to have high rpms in light commercials and cars, but these have big journals etc to handle the speed. Ah, that'll be a major issue, if that's a weak point on the Yanmar design. Mechanical injected diesels tend to like lower rpms even though some will rev, the torque is still i...

1 and 4. Are there upgraded versions of these available, or would they have to be made? Looking around and not seeing anything, but... 3. However, there are direct injection diesels that get well into 5000 RPM territory (mine, a 1.9L VW TDI, will do 5100, with stock peak HP at 4000.) So, that means ...
