800cc TDI Twin from Volkswagen

Post by zarquon »

We talked about cutting engines in half in the media sections some days ago.

Well, VW has done this in a more professional way. Maybe they did not use a chainsaw. :-)

In Quatar they are showing the "XL 1", their third Version of what VW called "1L-Auto" in German. A car that consumes only 1 liter of fuel on 100km.
The car uses a 800cc TDI twin producing 48 hp.

Oh Lord! Let Volkswagen produce a motorcycle with this engine!
Let us pray together!

And here is a german article: http://www.spiegel.de/auto/aktuell/0,15 ... 09,00.html

Something worth noting is that that fuel economy is only on the (11 km) NEDC cycle, on a fully-charged battery.

Discharged, based on the range estimates, the actual fuel economy is more like 1.94 L/100 km.

In the past I had 55PS Diesel Golf I that gave me an economy of approx 5l/100km. And a Ford Escort, also with 55PS Diesel and the same fuel consumption. Even with their poorer air resistance you should theoretically achieve less than 3l/100km.

I take that engine!

you could do what happend to the prototype diesel Beetle back in the 50's. Steel it. Problem with the diesel beetle, it was so underpowered, even less power than a factory 1200 beetle, the perps left it sitting on the side of the road and walked away from it.
