Re: Very off-topic pet-seal question!

Hi Mark, I used a product called petseal remover, I got it off e bay, it turned the petseal into small grains like sand which were easily washed out. Following that I did the electrolytic process to get rid of rust, then recoated with POR21 from frost automotive.

Re: Front forks

I did a similar thing when I fitted a set of yamaha 250 forks to a 650 bsa a few years ago, I ended up getting a set of springs made 25% stronger than standard, I used a company called active springs in Studley, Warickshire, from memory they were quite cheap.

Re: kubota... to be or not to be

Hi Erik, I've now finished the adapter to mount the engine/gearbox, http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss343/phils4pics/BILD0119.jpg , I'm currently making the front section of the frame to accomodate the radiator. Coachego, I know its an old thread but if it is any use the 850 has a weight of 82.6k...

Re: what kind of welding?

The type of welding is not as important as carefully considered mount design, they need to be designed to minimise localised stress which could lead to failure. Another important factor is the quality of the weld, correctly welded MMA could be better than badly performed TIG which should be theoreti...

Sorry about your tale of woe. I mated a Kubota d950 to a bmw clutch and orriginally thought the holes matched, only to find that one of the Kubota holes is asymetric (easily fixed with a bt of filing of the clutch).

Re: Back (again!)

Youve already got a 5 speed gearbox, just machine the MZ engine off it! That should also sort out final drive allignment if you use the MZ frame, you just need to make front downtubes and cradle and sort out primary drive. It might be possible to get the MZ clutch onto the diesel engine and get it t...

Re: hello from Towcester.

Hi Dan, welcome, Ive got a MT500 I,ve had for years, I wouldnt think it would be a good starting point for a conversion, the MT swingarm bears on the gearbox of the rotax engine, which is a short engine anyway, not much space to fit a seperate engine and box and the frame is open at the bottom, with...

kuboto/bmw progress

Hi all, finally made some progress with my D950/BMW build. This took a lot longer than I hoped as the quote for the welding of the bellhousing adapter was so high I decided to buy a tig welder and learn alloy welding! Once I was satisfied with my welding I joined the 10mm adapter plate to the machin...

I'm afraid there is no easy correlation between number of clutch plates/torque, inded some of the more torquey bikes eg big BMW and Guzzis have single plate car type clutches. Best advice I would give is to use a clutch off a bike with a similar power/torque outpt to what your intending to use, howe...

The pic where it is loosly slid over the splines on the gearbox, not the crank, the bit that is turned down goes in the centre of the crank, the bottom pic shows the adapter in the crank, the hole where the gearbox splines fit can be seen.

No idea of the sizes but I do remember a MZ ETZ250 had a clutch mounted on a taper on the end of the crank, maybe you could have your crank ground down to match the clutch?

Have a lok at this site http://www.bobnewbyracing.com/ , probably costs a fair amount though! Id be tempted to run the clutch dry (Ensure the rollers are well packed with grease) and fit an o ring chain, if it works then you can convert to belt drive later (it would certainly be cheaper to change ra...

Hi Neil, the pre unit gearboxes you are likely to find in the UK are 50-60S british gearboxes, all will be 4 speed, kickstart and will have gearchange on right. The three main types are BSA, Norton/AMC and Burman. None have the clutch built in, you will have to source a seperate clutch. The clutch w...

hmmmm... is the MBW starter lighter than Kubota? What model BMW? Hi, Im using a D950 which I have mated to a BMW clutch, this only needed minimal machining to fit the Kubota crank (and the holes almost align (the kubota has asymetric holes to ensure the flywheel will only fit one way, nothing a judicious amount of filing didnt cure) The BMW starter motor can also...

Hi mate, which clutch are you using? BMW have a heavy (early) and a light (later) clutch. Ive mated a heavy one to my kubota d950 and found that the flywheel is only just heavy enough, I would think it would stall when coming off the throttle with a lighter clutch.

Yes, your ratio is 3.36:1 which is less than the r100rs box at 3:1, if you were to change boxes you could increase your overall ratio by just over 11%. I picked up my box off ebay for £30, but they usually go for around £100.

According to my info your bevelbox is 3.89:1 (should be stamped 35/9 on top of casting just infront of mounting flange, the highest you can get is off a R100RS at 3.00:1 (should be stamped 33/11). Swapping to the RS bevel box will give you a 13% increase and get you another 8mph ish . There is a hig...

Dont know if its any use to you but I'm using the rear part of the BMW crankcase, sawn off then milled to the required depth then welded to an adapter plate to mate my BMW gearbox to a kuboto D950.
