Hi Mark, I used a product called petseal remover, I got it off e bay, it turned the petseal into small grains like sand which were easily washed out. Following that I did the electrolytic process to get rid of rust, then recoated with POR21 from frost automotive.

Just check that the chain doesnt hit the gearbox casing, especially if you are going to run o ring chain. Also check the chain allignment

I did a similar thing when I fitted a set of yamaha 250 forks to a 650 bsa a few years ago, I ended up getting a set of springs made 25% stronger than standard, I used a company called active springs in Studley, Warickshire, from memory they were quite cheap.

Sorry about your tale of woe. I mated a Kubota d950 to a bmw clutch and orriginally thought the holes matched, only to find that one of the Kubota holes is asymetric (easily fixed with a bt of filing of the clutch).

Youve already got a 5 speed gearbox, just machine the MZ engine off it! That should also sort out final drive allignment if you use the MZ frame, you just need to make front downtubes and cradle and sort out primary drive. I'm afraid there is no easy correlation between number of clutch plates/torque, inded some of the more torquey bikes eg big BMW and Guzzis have single plate car type clutches. The pic where it is loosly slid over the splines on the gearbox,not the crank, the bit that is turned down goes in the centre of the crank, the bottom pic shows the adapter in the crank, the hole where the gearbox splines fit can be seen.

No idea of the sizes but I do remember a MZ ETZ250 had a clutch mounted on a taper on the end of the crank, maybe you could have your crank ground down to match the clutch?

hmmmm... is the MBW starter lighter than Kubota? What model BMW? Yes the motor is lighter (mine is from a R75) but has successfully started it in my test rig, If it proves unreliable there are uprated motors available for BMWs (I think they are based on toyota truck motors) from a company in the UK...

Hi mate, which clutch are you using? BMW have a heavy (early) and a light (later) clutch. Ive mated a heavy one to my kubota d950 and found that the flywheel is only just heavy enough, I would think it would stall when coming off the throttle with a lighter clutch.

Yes, your ratio is 3.36:1 which is less than the r100rs box at 3:1, if you were to change boxes you could increase your overall ratio by just over 11%. I picked up my box off ebay for £30, but they usually go for around £100.

According to my info your bevelbox is 3.89:1 (should be stamped 35/9 on top of casting just infront of mounting flange, the highest you can get is off a R100RS at 3.00:1 (should be stamped 33/11).
