Re: Hamm 2015 - 11 to 13 Sept

A good rally, the electric bikes were food for thought. This year went by diesel as the Triumph alternator failed, (now welded up). although with too many wheels for some :) but it did the 1100 Km on a tankful with 270 Km to spare (47 litre tank). Meant I could take a bigger better warmer tent. Will...

Back home safe and sound and yes old sludgy made it all the way under his own steam. I think he's trying to tell me it's time for a rebuild after... Exhaust fell off Charging circuit failed Rear brake failed Horn fell off And finally the tank split on the way home. Apart from that he's running like...

Re: Haynes Manuals to halt production

It is a shame, although they seem to be keeping "some" of the manuals staff. I have a feeling it is a combination in part to modern vehicles being more difficult for the average owner to fix. the average owners abilities have declines significantly. ( I realised this when I discovered my s...

Re: 2014 rally

I agree with you Sam about the German rally. For me it is two days riding with an overnight stop each way minimum. In the past I have had ice on my tent on the way up and cold and rain during the rally. So these days I get ready for it but check out the weather for a 7 day window over quite a lot of...

Hollbrook Lathe no longer available

My very old and trusty lathe is now surplus to requirements. Very soon I hope to be turning wood again instead of metal. It is big, you can skim car cylinder heads mounted on its faceplate. it comes with two chuck, both 12" one three jaw self centering, one four jaw independent. the jaws can be...

Re: The problem with petrol - E15 blend

My Enfield and my car 1990 model both do significantly less mpg using e10. so much so it is worth the 2-3 p per litre extra to buy 98 grade. (which performs marginally better than non ethanol 95ron.

My sentiments exactly Sam, note also often the petrol for ten years or so after the war was "pool petrol" at about 65 octane.

My current Enfield is managing about 95mpg. (carb)

My 1961 Triumph 500 would do much more than that, but in those days 4 star was 4/7 a gallon ( four shillings 7 pence) which in new lire is just under 23P

What was forgotten is that pistons are accelerating and decelerating faster at the top of the stroke than the bottom. as a consequence when the motor is at TDC or BDc there is always some vibration. especially with singles, some twins and fours as usually all the pistons stop at the same time twice ...

Re: How to up fuel efficiency

never be seduced into raising the gearing, all that helps is top speed downhill.
check chain alignment and make sure they are well lubricated, but the biggest variable of all is the hand on the throttle.

also anticipate, using brakes is wasting energy so slow up on the throttle in plenty of time.

bike trailer for a bike

Hi
Does anyone know of a bike trailer that can be towed empty with a bike. If possible I would like to buy a car in the UK and if I could tow the trailer with my bike there I could then use the trailer to return in the car towing trailer and bike.

If you fix things properly if possible, you should not have to go back to that fault again. eventually you should win.

Sometimes there is a design fault you cannot overcome, such as water pumps failing in the old Hilman imps .

I built a 20ft inshore fishing boat around 1970 in it I installed a 9.5hp Yanmar diesel . It was equipped with a dynastarter. connected to a large flywheel by two vee belts. Was a very good engine, although I usually started it by winding the handle :)
