Welcome, This forum is pretty small so its easy to find stuff and many of your questions have already been addressed. Have a good read and I am sure it will answer many of your questions. The mounts are easy to make yourself, dead easy if you have access to a lathe, milling machine and welder. As fo...

Blue Ridge Diesel should be able to put you on the right track if you are in the US. http://www.blueridgediesel.com/ I found a MD 151 on ebay, have also seen MD191 there also but they are few and far between used. If you have more time than money it pays to keep your eyes open, if you are in a hurry...

I see that now. I went back and reread it. Do we even have a small dimension 15+ (20-30 would be the ideal range, but I can make do with 15) horsepower single or V-twins (or higher) in the states that won't melt the wallet? Ruggerini MD151 16.3 hp. Ruggerini MD 191 19 hp. Or the identical Lo...

Well, there is a little technique. I cannot directly kick over compression either, what you have to do is position the crank so you can store up some energy in the flywheel to help it kick over compression. In other words it should hit compression at the end of the kick starter stroke after it build...

Re: clone report
Andrew, Why not get us a more detail report on your luck with the clone engine you have? You're one of the few that has been running one of these, and I'd like to know what you think about the power, vibration, fuel mileage, and other things about it. I'm also running a clone, but haven't gotten mu...

Re: Diesel Advantage?
The price of diesel fuel in North America is inching up. Not long ago diesel was cheaper than gasoline. On March 27th the average prices were (all prices per imperial gallon): Eastern Ontario Canada: gasoline- $4.91/imp gal; diesel-5.36/imp gal Upper NY State USA: gasoline-4.04/imp gal; diesel-$5.0...

If you are only getting 50 -60 miles per gallon you have issues with that setup. The worst I have ever gotten with my 10 HP in an Enfield is 122 miles per US gallon and the best was 178. It routinely gets 145 -155. I run the living snot out of it. I do use a little Stanadyne cetane enhancer in the f...

I would be very cautious of using ether on these small aluminum diesels. I have seen the results of this and it is not pretty. Better to find out and fix why it is not starting in the first place. I would suspect low compression for some reason. Maybe too thick of a head gasket, maybe the head was m...

My Engine is the 10 HP, 406 cc Launtop branded. Yeah I don't know what it is with this engine but it has always been very easy to start. When I first got the engine new I mounted it on a pallet to test run it, filled it with oil and fuel and called a friend to pull start it for me since I had hurt m...

Easy starting diesel
It was 35 F here today when I decided to go for a little ride on my Yanclone powered Enfield. The bike was cold soaked. One kick and she was running. No preheat, just compression. This engine amazes me.

It is interesting to read about the starting difficulties. I know it is a different engine, but the Chinese built Yanmar clone 406cc I have in my Enfield is very easy to kick start. If the temperature is anything over 50F it has never needed more than 1 kick, and I have successfully started it down ...

If you gear the starter to the engine with a low enough ratio so the starter has enough torque to actually turn the engine over compression, the starter motor would turn way too high rpm at running rpm. Smaller turbine engines (such as the PT6) frequently use a starter generator combo. The starter/g...

I'm sorry if I sounded prickish in my reply, but what I was getting at was it would make a wild difference what kind of bike you are putting the D950 engine in, is it a 1000 pound Ural sidecar rig with 2wd and a ton of wind drag or a 400 pound bike with an aerodynamic fairing. Sorry if you have post...

No comment on Chicago  lol..but you are close to Wisconsin and that has some very pretty areas...... Judging from the pictures I have seen, the punsen wont fit either without changing the primary drive. I might be wrong though, I have only seen pictures of this set up. As for the 4 speed stealing power, if it is properly set up and with oil instead of grease there is no reason it will be less effic...

Ok, gotcha and the 1B40 is too large to fit with the 5 spd. I guess for me the 40 ish percent greater horsepower would be worth more than the extra gear. I have a 4 spd in my Yanclone powered RE and I really don't think the jump between third and fourth is all that bad. At least its not bad enough I...

In the size and rather portly weight range of the three cylinder liquid cooled Honda there are many choices, Kubota, Yanmar, Briggs Daihatsu to name just a few. For example: Kubota D902-E3B only weighs 72 kg and is 24.8 hp at 3600 RPM. That seems a very substantial weight savings over the Honda and ...

I will use the strobe light idea. If this think is a buzzy engine when I first run it I will tear it down completely and balance it. If it still buzzes then I will explore a counter weight on the flywheel. I considered doing it right away, but seems it would make more sense to see if I have a proble...

You are on the right track Greg. Its basically what a hybrid vehicle uses. Small engine to supply continuous demands, chosen so that at its most likely average demand it is operating at its most efficient power setting, electric for good acceleration, and a way to re-capture braking losses. In city ...

Thanks Heiko for the link, and also Stuart for the translation. I had stumbled across that before but had forgotton about it. What it looks like is he basically fabricated a counter-weight to attach to the flywheel. I am going to experiment with that when I get my engine started. I bought my engine ...

Avery, the rocking couple idea is something I hadn't thought about. That could certainly set up a side to side vibration. I have to think about this some more. oldbmw, interesting. I could. I think, put this engine in without shortening the down tube by eliminating the electric starter. I don't know...
