finished d950 anyone?
just getting to sorting fuel tank out for the bike and am trying to find out what sort of mpg i will get out of a d950
i really want a small tank but need to get at least to work and back on a fill-up
any ideas?

yea - i know its not a good one to guess which i why i was hopeing someone had a completed d950 project and they could tell me what they were getting.that would give me a reasonably accurate guess.
and yup - daily fill up is a chore but i did it on my chop for 6 months filling going in and out of london - at least i can fill up in my garage if its just the once a day

Asking what kind of mileage an engine will get is an unanswerable question without more information. What kind of bike are you putting it in? How much will it weigh? How much wind drag will you have? How fast do you drive?
If you want a rough idea, look up the specific fuel consumption specs for your engine, figure out how much horsepower you think you will be using and what the rpm will be at your cruising speed and do some calculations.

not being arsy but - its not an unanswerable question if you are running that engine in a bike... which is what i was asking
if someone wanted to build a shovelhead i can tell them roughly what mpg they will get by telling them what i get - im not talking accurate but ballpark figure, same goes for any of my bikes that i have running - yep it depends on how happy you are on the throttle and weight and all that other stuff but it is a GOOD ESTIMATE - probably more accurate than my sums would be based on absolute guesses

Check out David Hubbard's BMW R80RT on the dieselbike.net website. IIRC this bike gets about 84 mpg (imperial) two up at 70 mph which closely matches the specific fuel consumption figures for the engine and the power requirements for 70 mph which is 12 - 15 hp. Perhaps someone has contact info for David.

I'm sorry if I sounded prickish in my reply, but what I was getting at was it would make a wild difference what kind of bike you are putting the D950 engine in, is it a 1000 pound Ural sidecar rig with 2wd and a ton of wind drag or a 400 pound bike with an aerodynamic fairing. Sorry if you have posted what kind of bike this engine is going into in another post. Also, just out of curiosity, is this a D950 Kubota, or a D950 Daihatsu/Briggs?

I'm sure you will get that sort of economy. Gearing etc plays a big role in economy along with wind drag etc. I stick a bit of Acetone in the tank to help mainly with performance rather than economy, getting anywhere from 1.4 to 2.2 liters to the 100 K's. Just depends on the conditions "and waiting for ages in traffic" etc.
Reading through the posts I'm sure I read somewhere that your going for high gearing? If you can get hold of the spec sheet for your engine and see where the torque and fuel burn rates are the best and go from there.
