Re: The FrankenBrick Smart BMW build
Thanks Neil. I am going to use the original K 100 in tank pump and canister filter because obviously, in the original petrol driven bike those injectors didn’t like dirt either. The fuel pump runs at about 3-4 bar which I am told is fine to feed the injector pump. It’s a shame the other ECU is “out...

Here is simplified wiring from the USA http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff179/touchwoodsden/Smart%20Diesel/ECU%20Pinout%20Schmatic1_zps1b5ycqbm.jpg However the sensor names on the Merc data sheet page didn’t match up with the descriptions on the Specialist Components Ltd (SC) ECU Spreadsheet. I f...

Re: Mating a VW engine, frame, and transmission
Sort of. The Kawasaki housing is designed to bolt to the side of the engine cases but unlike the XS750 is designed to be more esthetically integrated to the engine. My application has a number of requirements that add a level of complication that most people here won’t need. In my situation running ...

Re: Mating a VW engine, frame, and transmission
Another option to consider: There are many Japanese made bikes that have transverse engines and are shaft drive. In these bikes there is a bevel gear at the output of the transmission that usually has a ratio of between 1:3 and 1:1.1. These are referred to as the middle drive gear set or middle beve...

Re: Tech Pictures of the HDT engine
Better late then never. The largest determining factor in the rev limit to performance diesel engines is not the mass of the reciprocating parts or the fueling system or anything else mechanical. It is determined solely by the speed at of the flame front or the speed at which the air fuel charge can...

Re: Smart engine source - Vehicle breakers
If anyone is thinking of getting a smart motor for a project make sure you get as much of the car as you can. Even if you don't need many of the parts such as the harness (and you shouldn't need that much of it) get it, as all the connectors to the various sensors are there. Make sure you get all th...

Re: Diesel engine management systems
Hey Stuart and Simon. I'm the guy in the US using Simons ECU (sorry I haven't posted any updates recently). Let me first start of by saying the Smart engine using the SC ECU was relatively easy to get running (in a previous post here I included a link to a YouTube clip of the engine running) and the...

Re: WTD: Smart ForTwo 800cc CDI engine, loom and ECU
FWIW the frame for my bike is almost complete. Once it's welded I'll fit the smart motor with trans and the temporary swing arm and final drive. After that step I'll be tuning the smart engine with a new exhaust header, bigger turbo and custom intake plenum, intercooler. I think that 140Lbft of torq...

Little slow in responding sorry. These engines are for 2 different ongoing motorcycle projects. The first is a Hub Center steered "race" bike of sorts and you see my agonizingly slow progress here: http://nofalloff.blogspot.com/ . The second engine will get built into a street bike more si...

Mouse, Good eyes. Yes that was one of the prototypes milled from MDF (medium density fiberboard). There were 4 versions before I milled the final from AL. My shop usually isn't that clean. I just happened to take this picture after we finished straightening up for the annual holiday party.

Once I get my transmission and figure out how to attach it with a working clutch, the frame and suspension design can begin in earnest.

Re: ECU for CDI engines
Here's a bit of what I've found out there. I have emails out to them and I'll follow up if I find anything that people here may find useful. I'm purposefully leaving out the sites from Bosch and Dephi as those systems start at the 6K (and up) euro price point and are therefor out of the price range ...

ECU for CDI engines
Hi all. What are the options for aftermarket or at least programmable ECU's for multi cylinder CDI diesel engines? I have a project that I'm in the planning stages for that is based around an 800cc Smart CDI. The engine I have didn't come with the ECU (or 3 ECUs as the case may be), and I'd really l...
