Smart engine source - Vehicle breakers

Post by Stuart »

I've just found a piece of paper reminding me where I got my Smart engine from in the UK.
I'll post the link in case it's of any help to someone contemplating buying one.

What does a smart engine go for anyway?

I was probably one of the first to get a diesel smart engine from a specialist breakers but the thing that cost the money was having all the other parts & loom picked from the car. It did cost a lot but I thought it worth it because of the low mileage. Time = money.

Well I requested everything connected with the loom, just to be on the safe side. Quite a bit came back from Neil that was not needed. We had to replace loom itself as mine had some damage. The accelerator, speedo, air box/ECU, came back. Alternator was used of course.
There is a critical difference between petrol & diesel fuel filters but it's not obvious! Both have earth tags to stop sparks but only petrol needs these :-)

If anyone is thinking of getting a smart motor for a project make sure you get as much of the car as you can. Even if you don't need many of the parts such as the harness (and you shouldn't need that much of it) get it, as all the connectors to the various sensors are there. Make sure you get all the sensors themselves and especially the turbo, starter, alternator water pump etc. If you have to source any of these things after you buy the motor it will cost you a lot of money and many salvage yards will throw them in to the deal for far less than you'll pay if you have to get them individually. That said I completely made my own harness as I used a Specialist Components ECU which requires wiring and pinning 2 Amphenol connectors (you do have an Amphenol pin crimping tool don't you?). FWIW I also used a small one wire alternator from a Kubota fork lift as it generated more than enough power for the ecu, injector controller and lights, and being one wire it had the rectifier and regulator built in and will produce less drag on the motor than the stock alternator..
