186 Based Custom Diesel Desert Sled For Sale in So Cal
I really like this bike but it isn't the right thing for getting around Los Angeles city parts. The basics: 186 yanclone engine Norton Atlas 4-speed transmission with Commando mainshaft and belt-conversion diaphragm clutch Wheels, forks, swingarm, etc from 1972 Honda XL 250 Tig welded 4130 steel fra...

Re: California Emissions
I have built a diesel bike from scratch and have it registered as a Special Construction vehicle in California, no where in the process is there an inspection of smog or emissions equipment. They want to see receipts/ proof or legal ownership for major components, as well as make sure it isn't just ...

Intercooler Core
This intercooler core needs to go to a good home. I bought it thinking I would rig up some kind of forced induction, which I would still like to do, but I certainly won't get around to for at least a couple of years. Dimensions are 1.25" x 2.7" x 6". Made by Bell Intercoolers, they ra...

Re: voltage regulation from a 186
sbrumby- generator output is supposed to be about 30 watts, all of my electricals are LED except the bulb behind the speedo, which I've actually measured and its draw is miniscule. The headlamp pulls 18 watts while on. If the head light is off then the only draw is that speedo bulb and the taillight...

voltage regulation from a 186
Hey folks, Electricity is dark magic to me, so please pardon if this is simple. I'm trying to understand some electrical gremlins which basically cause me to have a flat battery after riding with the headlight on for more than a couple of hours. The bike is based around a Launtop 186fa with its stoc...

Re: 186 Yanclone Glow Plug and other Starting Aids
I've read enough about warnings about ether starting fluid in diesels that I haven't tried that yet, but of course have been curious. UAofE, can you tell me a little about you you apply the stuff? And are you running it on a yanclone? sbrumby- Yah, i use the decomp lever, just like you described. Th...

186 Yanclone Glow Plug and other Starting Aids
I still haven't wired up the glow plug on my 186 Launtop, but I am getting curious about it. You know, the one that just dangles in the intake tract? I recently got a kickstarter for my old Norton gearbox, sometimes it works really well, other times not at all.... If the glow plug is actually effect...

Peltier/Seebeck chips to supplement a tiny alternator
I have a bike built around a 186 type single cylinder with a (rated) 35 watt alternator (or generator I can't remember which). All of my lights are LED's including the headlight, which is supposed to be about 16 watts on low, and 32 on high, I thought that I would be able to run on low beam cruising...

Long Haul Gravel Sled
Ok, not really a building thread because its done and built, but some folks might like to hear me ramble about how I put together my diesel bike. I wish I had taken some more pictures in the build process, but I kind of get into the flow of things and forget about a camera... There are so many nitty...

Small Intercooler Core
I'm putting this small little intercooler core out there in case somebody wants to try it out. I bought it thinking that it mate with an AMR 300 and a 186 yanclone, the numbers all looked good, but I just ran out of access to a really good shop before I could fab up the mounts and plumbing to make i...

Re: 418cc yanclone simulations
Corky Bell has a nice section in 'Maximum Boost' about the stress of boosting an engine. The compressive load of combustion on the piston and connecting rod are counteracted by the inertial forces of the piston accelerating toward center stroke. An increase in torque will increase the load on the co...

418cc yanclone simulations
With no clear light shining forward in all the talk of turbos with these little 186 type yanclones, I couldn't help but think it would be nice if we could get some kind of simulation and see some action without so much sweat (and turbo plumbing). After months of wishing, I finally was given a userna...

Tappy- This is good stuff. Theres a lot of new systems here for me to wrap my head around, and yeah, the lights not always shining brightly in all the corners of the room. You've helped a few things click into place.

Re: Disappointing turbo performance
My simple logic is that 7 pounds boost = 50% more air into the engine = 50% more power. (I know the math is off due to temperature increase of the intake charge) Its easy to see that working the turbo would take up some of that power but I have a hard time imagining it taking up ~4-5 hp. If there is...

Re: Disappointing turbo performance
But the numbers do plot within the design range. I think we should say that this turbo is not ideal ( this whole project is marginal in so many ways and I think that is a lot of its appeal) but that its really ok and certainly the best we got right now. My short ramble (longer ramble in the 'end of ...

Re: Turbocharging the Yan-clone L100: End of the Trail?
How is the power in the middle of the range? Does it push better with turbo up a hill at say, 2500 rpm?
This is getting to be a tough riddle. It may be time to walk away, but without a clear answer I myself can't start putting nails in the coffin.

Re: Turbocharging the Yan-clone L100: End of the Trail?
I'm getting into this a little bit late, so this might be a bit of a ramble. A hyper-mileage, highway capable dirt loving scrambler is becoming somewhat of a grail for me. Theres a launtop 10 hp unit on my porch, a vz21 under the desk, and an xl 250 rolling chassis down the street... I was feeling p...
