My bike keeps killing fuel gauges

Post by alexanderfoti »

Hi all

Im pretty sure the vibrations keep killing my fuel gauges.

I am using a gauge and tank setup from a suzuki Katana ay50. The gauges look like this:

The issue is that after having them on the bike for a while, the needle flys around randomly, but only when the engine is running, and then when its revved. With the engine off it displays the correct level. I ended up replacing one of the gauges which fixed it for a while, but then the other side started doing it. My thoughts are that the bike is shaking the gauges to bits, any thoughts?

Instead of using a needle gauge, why not use an LED or LCD bar? You can buy LEDs and bar-graph generator chips for pence.

Some fuel gauges are regulated to 5VDC, not 12VDC. Might want to check the specs on the gauge you're using to see what it's designed for.

That's a good point - the voltage on those little 50cc engines often drops quite low so it's quite possible that the instruments are driven off a regulated 5V supply...

Many thanks, I did double check and they are meant to be 12v.

The failure on this gauge turned out to be a dodgy 12v connection, all sorted now! :)

Let us know how you get on with your fuel gauge, and maybe share your experiences fitting it. I'm sure that there's quite a few people out there, who are interested in fitting a reliable fuel gauge/indicating system to their bikes.
There's nothing like the smell of burnt vegetable oil in the morning!!

well, my bike is a 250 superdream, which doesnt have a fuel sender, so at the moment, I have 2 6liter fuel tanks on either side of the rear of the bike, there is 2 fuel gauges for each of them, from there, I cut out the fuel gauges from the same models dashs (suzuki ay50) and wired them up.

Realitely simple but the gauges arent that accurate, its just nice to know generically whats in each tank.
