Hi,I'm building a r.e. bullet 500 my2000 diesel conversion with a lombardini ld500 engine.
I'm searching for a extended mainshaft for the gearbox and I've come up with two options:
One is from henry price at 65 pounds and second is from sommer diesel at 250 euros (much more expensive)
Does anyone know which one is better actually?
thanks
Which longer mainshaft is better for R.E.??

Re: Which longer mainshaft is better for R.E.??
Hi,
Yes, my experience is to keep the mainshaft as short as possible, keeping the engine balance ( in the frame ) in mind.
Standard Enfield mainshaft length is 11" or 279mm.
The one from henry price is as far as I know the longer version standard+55 mm, the one from Sommer is standard+40 mm, the original Taurus mainshaft is standard+36mm. Regards, Erik

I have extra support at one end in the shape of bearings.

Hi Stuart,Stuart wrote:I have extra support at one end in the shape of bearings.
How is the extra support made ? I am planning a housing for a needle bearing with innerring to mount in the original Taurus inner primary chaincase

I have a standard length shaft which fits into an elongated rear on the clutch. It's the rear of the clutch that rests in 2 bearings.

There's a few shots in this thread that show my arrangement. A bit over engineered maybe but solid.

Oh yes, I see it that way. The clutch with the rear bearing is kept solid in a fixed place. Probably needed to cope with the Ruggerini torque,

Better a little over (so long as you aren't blowing it out of proportion) than any under.Stuart wrote:There's a few shots in this thread that show my arrangement. A bit over engineered maybe but solid.

Does anyone have a drawing with the measurements of the gearbox shaft? Since the lenthened ones seem to wobble, i am looking for a way to let it made at one piece.. at a fairer rate as the Sommer bloke offers..
And indeed which length is the best for an yanclone suited in the middle?
i think it would be best if the inner primary is bolted directly on the engine..?
