Re: CVT design- make that diesel spin faster

Question.. 1. Size. What determines the size of Disks to use? I have tiny ones from scooters and a Massive one from a diesel UTV. It is approx 9" in diameter. I had planned to use the disk.. But the size is killing me. The size of the discs is determined by the tension loads that can be transmi...

Re: CVT design- make that diesel spin faster

Best bet would be to increase the rpm before the CVT. Most engines run at higher rpm than our diesels so the belts are designed for surface speeds and tension loads typical of those systems. By increasing the design rpm of the CVT you'll be able to use a narrower belt, or the same belt on smaller di...

Re: Keep snapping belts!

I think the failure in your picture actually looks closer to the fatigue failure, which would kinda tie in with you having the belt go around such a small front sprocket - the tight angle and short wrap distance will be putting a lot of load on the belt. It would also suffer more fatigue if the pull...

Re: DIY bang-bang on turboed singles?

If you open the exhaust valve very early then you're just reducing engine crank output to drive the turbo instead. This is a much less efficient way to extract energy from the fuel so your fuel consumption will rocket. You'll need a very heavy exhaust manifold to cope with the pressures and if the d...

BT45s are an excellent tyre considering their low price - good wear, good dry and wet grip, and only slightly nervous on very cold wet roads. The Pilot Road 2 and 3 are also very good, but far more expensive. They're also lovely and floppy and soft so very easy to fit! I haven't bothered with the Pi...

Aixam Kubota 480 for £250

Heads up - there's a Kubota 482(?) for sale in Derby on ebay. It was £350 a few weeks ago, then reduced to £300, now it's at £250.
I'm half tempted myself but am a bit busy to pick it up.

You can also buy pre-made bends of 1mm thick stainless tube. Arrange them - along with any straight sections - and clamp them at each joint with two half-pipes and a pair of jubilee clips. Each have pipe should have a notch or hole in it big enough to tack weld the pieces together. This way you can ...

That looks to me more like the Punsun / Winsun 800cc V-twin. They do various "packaged" versions, one of which includes a CVT system with reverse, all ready to go in a small car. Those are of course air-cooled...

Re: daihatsu enfield

I agree. There are SOOO many ways you could do this. We need to know what your constraints are. What your preferences are. What you're trying to achieve. So - you've got a daihatsu 1.0L turbo engine. I think that makes up to 50hp. It must weigh a fair bit too. So you're going to need a pretty hefty ...

Re: 90cc Diesel engine

First off, you don't want a 90cc diesel engine. The engine in it is a 90cc petrol 4-stroke so probably makes about 8hp. The brochures say 8.82NM @ 6000rpm which is about 7.5hp so it might make a little more power at higher revs. At that amount of power your engine choice is limited to industrial eng...

Re: 15 more MPH

OooOOOOOooooh interesting idea :-) LPG has an energy content of 46.1MJ/Kg, whilst Ethanol has only 29.7MJ/Kg so for the same range you'd need rather more mass of ethanol. Of course the LPG is stored under pressure, and the pressure vessel adds weight. At some point the weight of the two will cross o...

Re: Electric supercharger discussions

Well, to generate 5psig from a centrifugal compressor takes a perimiter speed of about 175m/s. So a 60mm diameter impellor would need about 55krpm, a 90mm impellor would need about 37krpm, a 120mm impellor about 28krpm and so on. I've said it before - this is vacuum cleaner territory. At the pressur...

Re: Electric supercharger discussions

I've just noticed something actually - that measurement of 16mm, did that come from the very end of the outlet pipe? From the step in diameter it looks like that's designed to have a hose going into it. What's the diameter of the pipe further in? Looks closer to 10mm? That would only give 30cfm x (1...

Re: Electric supercharger discussions

How much pressure do you think you're after? I think you said you want about 3hp extra, and let's assume that driving the supercharger takes 0.5hp, so you need +3.5 at the crank on a 10hp engine. That means you need 30% more air mass flow. If you use an intercooler that keeps the air at ambient temp...

Re: Electric supercharger discussions

Generally, the output air from a centrifugal pump is slowed down to Mn0.2 to 0.3, to reduce flow losses. After the modest pressure & temperature rise in the smog pump that might be around 0.2*350m/s = 70m/s. An outlet diameter of 16mm gives a flow area of .0002sq.m, so giving a flow rate of .014...

Re: Electric supercharger discussions

The reason the amps reading drops at zero flow is because the compressor is aerodynamically stalled. At this condition it's not moving air, but it's probably not generating its ideal pressure rise either. You need to measure the pressure at a few different flow rates. I accept that to know whether t...

Scavenge a turbo from a scrapped car , remove the exhaust driven turbine and replace with a pulley (after you establish how fast it will have to spin to provide the boost you want) and mount it up ! That's seems like a nice cheap idea. How to figure out how fast it needs to spin though? Flow charac...

Re: Pressurising fuel link

Sounds like an airlock waiting to happen in a diesel engine. If you pressurise the fuel tank enough that it does absorb more air, then when that pressure is released the air will come out of solution. So long as the fuel stays under pressure until it gets into the injector then I guess it might be OK?

Yeah, I'd be worried about that too - especially with a huge diesel flywheel and shaft drive. Doesn't sound like much fun on roundabouts in the wet.
Why do you want an automatic?
