Fuel tap Leak

Post by alexanderfoti »

Hi all

My xj600 fuel tap is leaking horrifically.

Im pretty sure the veg oil had disintegrated any rubber seals.

Any ideas how to get around this, I can probably make new seals out of gasket material but I dont think that will sort the leak out. Ideally I would like to replace it with a straight 8mm connection but it doesnt look like I can do that without casting some material.

Any thoughts?

What is the tank made of? Is it a Metal or plastic/fiberglass tank

Tank is metal. Mild steel I think.

are their any bulletin boards dedicated to your bike model? If so check them. I would bet ethanol fuels have made fuel tap seals wanky too so there may be threads on such a board on this topic that are relevant.

I went down that route but it wasn't full of useful responses.

I did however speak to nrp carbs who do a rebuild kit with viton rubber.

That ordered I tried to get the tap apart and the screws are siezed so a second hand one is on its way too. When that arrives I will rebuild it with the kit and get it on the bike. Happy days.

Well in the short term the good news is that repair kits are available.
This would get you back on the road until you sort out a better solution.

Should work.

It was hard to find the right kit. Those are for diversion xj600 rather than pre diversion. They are quit different bikes apart from the name and I couldn't confirm that the taps where the same between the models.

Anyway if it doesn't work I should think that if you removed the innards from the tap and made up a thin plate of alloy the same shape as the plate of the tap and screwed it on using a gasket or a small sheet of rubber(old tube) and sealant, you would then have a straight through union.
You could then fit a straight through industrial tap on the pipe as you will still have to remove the tank now and then.
You wouldn't have reserve though so you would have to carry a small reserve or reset the odometer so that you know app the time to fill up.

I'd be fairly positive about the Viton seals doing the job - we use it to seal a lot of stuff and it stands up well.
