Sidecar - Only Slightly OT

Post by pietenpol2002 »

The recent posting by Johnfireball of his beautifully crafted bike/sidecar combo prompts this post. For those of us with a bent toward resurrecting old iron and a desire for the addition of a sidecar, the following pics can bring a tear to the eye. Sadly, they're a bit too distant to retrieve. As if I don't have enough projects in the works.

i am pretty sure that is where yuri gets his to sell on ebay. but as soon as i finish the bike i am building now i'll probably go to ohio and pick up a two wheel drive one. cuz they are just so darn cool.

i am thinking that it is just begging for a 1.6 idi turbo vw on SVO.

I've seen pics of the Aircraft graveyard in the US! That has to be the legendary Motorcycle side-car graveyard. There must be a few bikes and sidecars amongst them that could be brought back to life. Some of them Chang Jiang 750's look pretty poorly, but with the right skills are put back on the road.

Good post ;)

Where is this place, I want to live there. As for yuri stole $140 off me on ebay for frame balls for sidecar mounting.Won't ever deal with him again. Ural zentrale or oldtimers store the only places for good ural and dnepr parts.

that seems to be the general opinion of everybody on the russian iron forums. the people who go in person to ohio seem to have better luck because they can pick out the parts they want. but no-one says it is an enjoyable time. it seems like he just has containers of junked dneprs sent over from yards like the photos above.

anyway gotta finish this one before i start another.

Sadly I have to admit that my Enfield was much like the junk in the pictures. Although, my rust bucket was still assembled and had petrol engine coated heavily with aluminiumoxide.

Interesting pictures - surprising that in Russia (I guess these are Russian pictures) someone thinks these bikes are worth more as scrap than spares. UK weigh-in price for an outfit can't be more than about 40 quid, so no wonder 'unrestored' Russian stuff is appearing on ebay - there appears to be business in it. 'Sovietmotor' in Derbyshire has lots of stuff on UK ebay, but prices are rather high in my view. UK 'Cossack' club is a good place to meet people to talk about Urals and Dneprs, but not many bikes appear for sale in magazine - I think most people use ebay these days.
