birdbrained idea
I too have got the bug, I have wanted to put a diesel engine in a bike for yonks, and its now or never. I went along to the bat n ball pub and that did it, Now i have a ural frame and a lombadini ld8 engine, do you think this could be a good combination or not. The engine is about 130kg and I think that its to heavy, but the hp should be just enough (17hp). Many thanks, Andy.

Hi Buckles,
Kind of gets under yer skin.....especially if you hold the injector tip when testing (DON'T DO THIS).
Anyway welcome to the dark side of motorcycling, be prepared for much mickey taking and quite a few trials in the build process but when it's all done you can ride around smoking up a storm feeling part of the really exclusive band of 'Dieselbikers'.
If 11Hp can get a Sommer Hatz to 65 then you should be looking at 70 for the 17hp motor in a heavy setup, that said my old Enfield only makes 50 most of the time and I've ridden that around the clock.
Cheers
Dave

Oddly enough Dave, i find 50-55 the most comfy cruising speed on my electra no idea yet as to mpg, but is definitely better than the bmw

Re: birdbrained idea
Iv'e had the lombadini running today, I bolted it to a large block of wood gave it some diesel and a good dose of 12V and off it went ,it was that good I stopped the engine just to start it again would make a great motor but I still thing its too heavy at around 130kg, So before I do owt else I will have a look at some other units.

Welcome to the forum Buckles, yes once you have the bug it's got you . Like with all projects the planning is the worst, once you get focused on what you would like to build etc, it all seems worth the while.
You craw before you walk, take your time with the planning and I'm sure you'll come up with something good.

I don't know if your Ural has a sidecar/sidecar frame, but you might consider mounting the engine on the sidecar frame if it's that heavy, it's been done before, and I think of doing the same someday as it makes sense to provide ballast.
Good luck and welcome.

Re: birdbrained idea
Hi all, I did not want to take up any room in the chair but to leave the layout just like it is, also I would like to use the bike as a solo from time to time. I have been looking at a perkins three cylinder unit, it looks just the job 75KG (dry) 20+ HP, 700cc, liquid cooled, I wanted to stay under the 1000cc mark, but its £1000 . Now, do I otp for the new lump or keep on trying to find a used one!. The idea at first was to keep it cheep and ratty but with fuel prices ever on the up I thought that if I build this right it should last me a lot longer, so money spent now will be saver in the future. How long it the head scratching process , I want to start building!. Yeah thats a little heavy on the hp to weight ratio scale. The Lombardini LDW1003 at 24ish hp is only 85kg (dry weight)

Re: birdbrained idea
Had to bite the bullet yesterday and went out and bought myself the new perkins engine I spoke of a couple of days ago, did well I think on the deal too, I phoned the bloke who had it up for sale got his address then told him I would be over to pick it up if the price was right, he sounded a bit miffed when I asked if it would fit on the back of my bike . An hour or so later we were strapping the little perkins diesel on the back of my GS adventure, so that's £850.00 spent already, a bit more cash than I planned on an engine but sod it eh! . So now I'm thinking marry the engine and box together then install into the frame, dose that sound about right?, spoke to my insurance company today too and they won't touch it . regards, Buckles.
