New bike URAL

Post by Diecycle »

This could just be a new to me bike but check out the Wolf by URAL

http://www.imz-ural.com/wolf/

Why I post it here is if you remember, I believe it was LocomotiveBreath who ran about on one of the sidecar URAL's with a Hatz2g40 and I think he might even still have an adapter plate lying about if he didn't sell it on ebay.
Anyway, that means the Hatz would be a shoe in conversion and there is even an transmission adapter plate available.

It could turn out to be an easy swap for a slick high milage diesel bike

i did a similar conversion on my dnepr, using the lombardini 25ld. i've seen the adaptor plates on ebay selling outrageously for $900 or so. i built mine for less than $200, am working on an adaptor for the punsun now as well. i still have my drawings and can fab another for a decent price should anyone be interested.

Wolf has been out for quite a while..just another silly cruiser. I would sure like to find a deal on an MT16 Dnepr or Ural 2wd with side car though so I could finally find a happy home for my 2G40 engine.

Yo! Adapter for Punsun Twin-Dnepr gearbox intrests me alot. It would be nice to have one ready made, not self invented.

Only drawback is that Shipment to Finland might become considerably high.
that should do it

Actually, $900 for an engine adapter isn't a huge amount of money providing the adapter is of excellent quality. I designed and fabricated a 100 percent bolt-on engine adapter to mate a BMW engine to my Dnepr - no hacking or welding of the Dnepr gearbox housing (yuk!) to relocate the mounting holes. The conversion is designed to be completely reversible.

It cost me $700 to purchase the materials and to farm out machining of one part of the two piece adapter (my offshore lathe isn't accurate enough). I did all the remainder of the fabrication myself. It would have cost at least $1000 to have someone else make the whole adapter.

Perhaps Punsen has a bell housing style adapter for their engine? Daihatsu sells one for the D950 which looks very similar to one made by http://www.guardiancouplings.com. The bell housing style adapters are used to mount hydraulic pumps to the flywheel. including the Daihatsu D950 (looks like the picture on their home page; could possibly be adapted for use with a gearbox) . Guardian will also make custom bellhousings. Perhaps if there is enough demand for Punsen adapters, a bunch of folks could pool resources to have a custom adapter made.

Here's a picture of my BMW/Dnepr engine adapter. I also fabricated the custom air cleaner ends to mate with the BMW engine and the custom starter cover.

Yes - the BMW engine for my Dnepr is a 600cc R60/5. BTW I just completed making the adapter a month ago. Since it's winter here and I'm currently working full time to finish my diesel bike project, the Dnepr engine transplant project is temporarily shelved, to be finished in the spring (several days work left to do). I also have a spare 900cc engine but I think it's too powerful for the Dnepr gearbox and final drive. A 750cc/800cc is ideal for the Dnepr - I may install a set of 750cc cylinders on the 900 engine if the R60 engine is too lazy.

Avery.

Ih8suvs--The site with the Wolf also has sidecar bikes for sale. I see them on ebay every now and again. I know a guy who purchased one of the overseas URAL sidecar knockoffs. I did not think it looked bad and he has not had any problems with it. Not a fine piece of workmanship but, functional and all he wanted was functional (oh and a wicked cool ride with his girlfriend in the sidecar)
