Finally Finished but can't register in Michigan, any ideas?

Post by wkoucky »

I finally finished my Enfield yamar clone after 7 years! I bought the bike without an engine from a guy online. He took my money and then imported a bike from India without a US title. I didn't think it was that big a deal but now our Secretary of State says it is impossible to register in Michigan. I was thinking of a trying to get a salvaged frame with a US vehicle id #. Any ideas?

Do you have a bill of sale? AKA paperwork that proves ownership? If so try

http://www.broadwaytitle.com/lost-automobile-titles.htm or http://haskellregistration.com/wordpress/

Basically what they do is register your vehicle in a state with looser registration laws giving you a plates, and registration from that state. Sometimes a title too. With those your better able to get what you need in your state a few months later. Make sure whichever title company you use that you ask them which states/counties in MI tend to reject paperwork processed thru an agency like theirs. It's not often but it happens. Does MI require a Title or Will they accept bill of sale?

There are a few company's that do what broadway and Haskell does too. Haskell is one I used for a unimog w/out a title long ago. They used my import papers and reciept of puchase from the forien vendor.

Their quote was $895! I think I could buy a salvaged bike to swap frames for that price.

Curious..... Haskell or Broadway?

Problem will be finding anything Enfield here in US to swap too. check States/counties around you that let you register vehicles with Bill of Sales and see if you can do it as the agencies do yourself?

I found an old frame locally that is a 69 or there about. I think the hassle then becomes getting a scrap title and moving everything over to the old frame

Legal! I registered as a new assembled bike. Two days in the DMV but it is titled and plated! Now I might have to sell to aid my business! I guess I could start another? I have a 1959 RE frame...

Congratulations! I know the feeling of finishing a bike and then having issues registering it. Its hard to think about legalities when you are building. But then it's done and you think "now what?" Not much fun of you ride anywhere!

That's great news. Must feel wonderful after all your work. How about some pics? Also, do consider detailing in the "Documentation Issues" section your process for getting it titled. Even though unique to Michigan, it might be helpful to some others.
