2 old Hatz engines

Post by t4halo »

Hello everyone. New member here with a question. I ride an old 69 Moto Guzzi and love all old bikes. I was helping a family friend work on a couple of BMW bikes he needs to sell. He is kind of a hoarder and has crap laying all over two barns. After tinkering with a bike he shows me a couple engines he's had for years. I know nothing about these things but he says they are 350 cc Hatz motors from the 80s and are brand new. Would these be worth building a bike around? What are they worth? I'm sure he would sell them to me if I could use them.

Thanks, Tony

If they are 350cc them they would be the 1B30 model like I had in my Enfield. They only generate about 9hp. I think the bigger twins are a better bet for a bike maybe?
Not sure of the value.

80's Hatzes of 350 ccm displacement sound more like 6 HP give or take one and some 40-50 kilos of weight. They would go OK into some old Zuendapp, Izh, Bantam or Enfield - i.e., light non-enduro bike - as long as you are ready to make compromises in power. For any other use, don't go under 400 ccm 10 HP. In fact, forget about the old lumps - 10 HP is widely considered biking minimum and you should by all means rather get such an engine than the ol' Hatzes if you can spare the cash. I mean the Yanclones which are now, apart from the usual 10 HP, also available in 12 HP for OK money. Although at that point, you also might seek a good deal on a used Kubota double or triple barreled lump.

Now, if you are dry like me it's another story - then, try to get both (one for spares.) :D

Hi,

Precisely, 10 HP diesel powered engines for motorcycles are about the minimum to keep up with the main road traffic speed.

I have 2 diesel bikes, the small one has a 275cc 6hp yanmar. This is great fun to ride but does 41mph. Around town it is faster than most cars. At 225mpg(imperial) it isnt a regular visitor at gas stations. The point i am trying to make it is it is very much horses for courses. People who buy superbikes enjoy the ride but see nothing.

Tony,

Whereabouts in Michigan? For the record, today I ranged from Royal Oak, Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo and Three Rivers. Some beautiful country.

Horses for curses? Why would you want to curse at the poor critters? :D
Earnestly, it depends on the price of the whole affair, really.
If the two 350 ccm engines are gonna cost roughly as much as one with 400 ccm, the latter would be the vastly better decision. (And with 10 HP we're still not talking superbike any way you look at it. :P )
Should, then again, one be on a very limited budget, and should the two 350 ccm brand-new engines cost significantly less than a 400 ccm one, then they absolutely are the way to go, one being for spares ( or for a spare bike :D ).

With two engines you might consider a reverse Trike. Power the front wheels and the rear. Once up to speed turn one off. Climbing hills........ have it kick back on. And/or make it an offroader where power to third wheel is for traction......... heck add a third engine in that scenario and go three wheel drive for hardcore offroading
