Hi My name is Eddy.
I have been toying with knocking up an oil burner for some time. Since the big guns of the motorcycling world have not produced anything as yet and the companies that did attempt to make one have now folded (apart from Sommer).
I have recently been offered a Lombardini 600 cc twin and I am currently cleaning it up to get it to a running engine before buying it.
I am looking forward to having a finished bike of reasonable performance in the near future (before I die).

Welcome Eddy & I wish you well with you build. I think the Modite Bmw used a Lombardini inline twin, if that's the engine you are lining up?

It is the LDW602 engine from around 1990. I do not need to buy it if it will not run owing to the motor being stood for a few years. I have stripped all the accessories off for cleaning and I can turn it over using the fan quite easily (dunno if I am supposed to be able to do that) and the fuel lines are shot. The next job is to pipe it all up,free off the injectors or just pump fuel through and see if it will fire up..
I will start trawling the forum for build info and will look for the bike you mentioned.

I don't think you're supposed to be able to turn it over that easily. Sounds like it's lost compression; since it should be resisting pretty stoutly at TDC. Perhaps the piston rings are gummed up?

Or it's dropped a valve? A hand over the intake or out take might give some indication (by way of suction). Saying that, the valve would probably be clouting the piston (given the tight tolerances on a diesel) so might just need a clean out?

I have not had time to look at the motor this week. I did suspect all was not well but until I take the engine apart I would be guessing as to the faults. I will be having another go at it next week luckily there is a guy 4 units up from my work who specialises in diesels and he has the necessary equipment to test the engine in fact he was the one who told me about the engine in the first place. (He has become my engine fitter by default 'cos he wants to see a finished bike as well).
I am hoping to get the build documented at some stage and I am currently scouring for a donor vehicle etc.

The good news is that as of 3pm yesterday 12/8/13 the motor now runs. It took a bit of easy start but she fired up with a bit of smoke and kept going on her own. The fuel supply was a Heath Robinson affair, as per usual, next job is to refit the rad and put some coolant through it, run the engine for a while and change the oil. I am also looking for an air filter box 'cos the original is missing.

Good to hear that its a runner! Presumably your diesel guy can do a compression check to ensure its running well on both cyls. If its been used as an industrial engine, there are different colour-coded governor springs available, mounted on the linkage in the cylinder head, depending on the rev-range required. In an automobile application where a variable throttle is required, a different governor (plunger barrel) is available. If you've downloaded the FOCS manual, you may have read all this.
Arctic Cat use the 702 diesel in one of theIr quads. I called one of their dealers to enquire the price of the plunger barrel..£134 ..+ VAT ouch! I'm planning to make one myself
A company in Corby (UK) called Bryco are agents for these too, although I've not used them yet.

The motor was from a local valeter who bought the motor and fitted a power washer pump on it. He got the engine from a customer who had it on a shelf (brand new). It has got the bell housing fitted instead of the 10mm plate, a radiator plus the guard. The only item missing is the rectangular air box cover and filter. I still have to refit the rad so I can run it up. It does rev freely spitting the odd chunk of carbon, probably due to being stood for a couple of years. My next job is to fabricate a stand, wire up a starter switch and the alternator, add a small test fuel tank and finally a temporary silencer (and that's before I start building a bike).

Hi Eddy, There are some great creations out there to provide inspiration. You've seen the Modite, (last seen by me at Hamm dieseltreffen in 2010) but check Youtube for Heiko Fleck's CX500 diesel. Its an inline shafty, using either a LDW602 or 702 with a CVT. Only a short video but interesting nevertheless. Check his website too.

Just seen the CX 500 video. Very impressive. I have been looking at the CX on eBay (other auction sites are available) but the prices are high. I must get my 1960's head off and come into the real world. I used to get five pints and fish and chips for ten bob. I am getting tearful now ...sob sob.
