406cc running a little rich

Post by Jonnyjagrussel »

The engine in my Enfield is running a little rich it's smoking on acceleration, not using oil so must be a bit rich. How do I adjust the fuel pump.

So not to assume anything incase your not a diesel head; yet. Don't let yourself think in petrol mode. Diesel's are a beast of a total different world.

Like CoachGeo said, Johnny, and don't forget it's a mixture of air & fuel. I'd check first for any restriction to air flow as filters certainly do get dirty, clogged, restricted etc. Make it easy on yourself before you make it hard on yourself

Might be worth checking the injector or using an additive type cleaner??

When I wanted a little more 'oomph' from my Hatz 1B30 engine I located the fueling screw & adjusted it slightly on the advise of a mate who works at an engine development & test centre. I figured that seeing as I was getting between 160 & 170 mpg from the bike, all I would be doing is altering the balance a touch toward more power (which I needed!). Anyway, the point being that these screws are present on engines & are usually located at the rear & underside.
I ended up with a bit more black smoke but it improved the ride.
Your screw maybe set wrong, or as the guys say, need some cleaning?
I swung my whole injector line & injector outside the cylinder one time & kicked the bike over. A DANGEROUS thing to do mind, so I stood well back. Spray pattern was ok for me but you could try that? Don't get within a few feet of it though or it will cut your fingers off!
Or just put the injector into an ultrasound to clean it? I have stripped them before but that's a tricky business.
Hope that helps. But be very careful with high pressure fuel lines - they really can kill you.

I took off the fuel pump today to find one shim on it, I decided to make a couple more and put them on. I guess they are approx 2mm between the two of them, after putting it back together it ram almost straight away with less smoke. It also revved more at tickover as I've changed the timing by putting in more shims, it sounded slightly different quieter if you like. I'm going to get hold of some correct shims and experiment, I've got a new air filter on order as well. Thanks for all. The help. Ill be back on when I've experimented some more.

Do a compression check NOW. No dont expect you have issues.... but you need a base line. After some miles recheck compression.... if it starts getting worse, do an Italian tune up and some engine cleaner and fuel cleaner with intent to try to get compression back up some. Then return back to previous IP settings.

A diesel's knock is a good thing. It mean's it is combusting properly. Granted it sounds like your ears did not get a chance to learn what its baseline knock sound was in the beginning.
