MZ Robin diesel for sale
I'm just putting out feelers but I might be selling my bike. I was just wanting to know if anyone would be interested for £1500
It's taxed and tested till the end of May and everything works.
It runs an Aixam CVT and I've just fitted a new belt.
As I said it's not definite yet as I might be looking at something else. Otherwise I might consider a swap for a large scooter or classic bike. pm me if you are interested. thanks

It has the Rickman fairing fitted now!
Just to add once again I also might be selling my 650 Yamaha Dragster trike.
The price on that would around £5k though. It's currently SORN(off the road)

Re: MZ Robin diesel for sale
Ok People I've decided to sell But while tidying it up a bit today as I've not used it for a few months I've discovered the bottom alloy flange of the starter motor is cracked allowing the starter to move preventing me from starting it. I had it running a few weeks ago and I can guarantee it runs ok. In fact it's a nice little engine!! I thought it sounded a bit different when starting but I put it down to lack of charge and when I did charge it up I found the real problem
I fitted a new belt(£50) and I started it then to check it out!!
It doesn't have a pull start and the transmission is CVT so you can't push or kick it.
It does however have a blank on the end of the cam which conceals a spigot for using a starting handle if anyone wants to make one up?? Anti clockwise turn.
I've always had the intention of making one up as an emergency measure but the charging system is a 2cv alternator and never failed so I've never got round to it. I still might have a go if it doesn't sell quickly.
Either that or if anyone's got a starter motor for a DY41/42 it's an easy repair.I suppose it could be alloy welded??
Looking at the parts manual it's 210-70502-10 and it would appear it's the same as the DY/30/35???
It's still taxed/tested till the end of the month so if anyone wants a cheapish bike for the rally this will do if you can get some way of starting it.
I have considered fitting an old Albion or Villiers box as there is no room for a standard brit bike gearbox. That would give you the kick start option??
The other option would be to drop in a Yanmar clone with tapered shaft.
I will drop the price to £1250 to allow for the starter.
I've also got a few MZ bits eg forks,front/rear wheels etc. I had considered getting the wider rear rim spoked to the front hub to beef it up a bit as MZ front wheels are a bit skinny.
I'll keep it on here for a couple of weeks then it'll be on ebay. Swaps or p/x considered!! Standard bike/scooter etc??
In the meantime I'll be looking for a starter please?????

Re: MZ Robin diesel for sale
Here is an update. I've now removed the starter and have taken some pics. I don't see any reason why it couldn't be alloy welded. There is plenty of room around it for reinforcing particularly on the inside as the casting is hollow.
This type of starter appears to be a later type that is of higher torque and is mounted to a plate which is then mounted to the normal starter position and appears to be a genuine later type modification.
It's this adapter plate that appears to have been the problem as the bolts holding it have come loose which in turn appears to have allowed the starter itself to move causing the break The joys of diesel motorcycling
If a standard older type of starter could be found (part numbers above) this could then be bolted straight to the crankcases without the adapter plate which would solve the problem!
If anyone is interested in the bike or wants more details please ask. As I said I'm always open to swaps etc. non diesel projects considered as long as it's all there
I'm retired now and just like to tinker

Re: MZ Robin diesel for sale
The starter casting is off and I'm trying to find someone local who could repair it.
Has anyone tried the low temp brazing method Lumiweld etc??
Anyway I've put it on SORN from the end of the month(missed the rally again) and I'm still open to offers/swaps etc. classic project,bike/scooter/small classic car or kit car or anything unusual. Try me
I'll try and get the starter sorted before it goes on ebay

I've ordered the low temp aluminium brazing kit so I'll let you know how it goes.

Your MZ Robin is one nice looking bike - I hope it realises a decent price when you list it. You've ordered the brazing rod already probably, but I have a small amount of 'Alutight' low temp (380C) alloy brazing rod I can let you have?

Re: MZ Robin diesel for sale
I've lost interest in the bike so it is now going on ebay at a much reduced price due to another problem.
I eventually repaired the starter using low temp weld and a steel bracket sandwiching some chemical metal in between for good measure lol !
I've now got a problem that wasn't there before.
It's starting ok but it's got what only can be described as a knock which I think is diesel knock?? I've double checked everything on the starter to make sure nothing was hitting due to my repair and even removed the starter while running.
It seems to be coming from the front around the pump area.
Maybe something has stuck due to it not being used??
The knock eases off just as you roll/feather the throttle back so I suspect pump or something??
It passed the MOT last year with no advisories so I've no reason to suspect it won't pass again.
It could be used for spares or even get a cheap yanmar clone and drop it in. It has a flat plate mounting so it's just a matter of drilling holes and fabricating exhaust etc.
It needs a battery and is partially stripped but I'll build it up again so you can see what you've got!
I'll consider a swop or take a p/x eg scooter, small classic bike etc. As long as it's all there W.H.Y.
£850 with some MZ cycle spares and another spare Rickman fairing . Bring a trailer lol

Re: MZ Robin diesel for sale
Just as a matter of interest I've taken the bike off ebay as I've sorted the knock. Turns out it was the flywheel not seating properly on it's taper despite the 41mm nut being tight.
The flywheel has been lying in my garage for 6 mths or so while I tried to get a starter. It must have picked up some grit or something.
Anyway I've mated the surfaces with grinding paste and put some extra torque(big bar) on the nut and all is well

Re: MZ Robin diesel for sale
A friend of mine has got a nearly new starter for the Robin engine. It was bought for the engine in his bobcat. It cost £190 + vat, the engine has since been scrapped and been replaced with a clone. But he still has the starter, he would like £90 if anyone interested.
