Noisy bearing

Post by sbrumby »

For a while now on my superdream with the Yanmar engine, I have had this noise when moveing, in town the noise would be louder than the engine sometimes. When i came to a stop the noise would go. If i ran the bike on the center stand and in gear, no noise. I suspected the gearbox but this never got warm. Anyway today while riding the noise changed and so did the speedo and i could see the speedo cable jumping. I checked the cable and that was ok. The clock was the thing that was making the noise. There must be a dry bearing inside. I tried another clock and exactly the same. 3rd clock was ok so it must be a problem with them. They do not dismantle so a hole drilled in the side so it can be oiled might be the answer if this one goes wrong.

Thanks sbrumby for sharing your 'noisy' experiences with everyone! I'm sure that someone will find your tip useful.
There's nothing like the smell of burnt vegetable oil in the morning!!

Sam, a while back I read an article in Classic Motorcycle Maniacs about a London-based guy who does clock/speedo repairs and restorations - Peter Bond is his name. british, jap, he does 'em all. I've never used his services, and they may not come cheap, but his domain is www.guagerepairs.com/
Regards, Bob.
