Gearbox grease

Post by alexanderfoti »

Hi all

I know I am meant to use EP00 grease but is there any issues with running EP2 Grease in my villiers enfield 4 speeder?

There's some general lubricant information at this first page, probably has a few hints for you:
http://www.machinerylubrication.com/Rea ... -selection

Viewing lubricant specifications:
Texaco EP 00/000 - Heavy duty semi-fluid mineral based lithium grease. Recommended for lubrication of wheel bearings in heavy duty road vehicles and rail vehicles, roller bearings in crushers, mills and mixers. Also recommended for use in steel mills, particularly in hot and cold rolling mills. Als for use in centralized systems where grease is supplied to highly loaded lubrication points. High performance chassis grease with special thickener to aid lubrication of gears and chassis. Excellent anti-wear characteristics with temperature range from -50*C to +120C degrees.

Conoco EP2 - Conoco Gear Oil is a heavy-duty extreme-pressure industrial gear lubricant formulated from high-quality hydrocracked base stocks to provide excellent oxidation inhibition, EP load-carrying capacity, resistance to foaming and rust and corrosion protection. Gear Oil is recommended for use in a variety of enclosed gear set types operating under demanding conditions. Gear Oil has been tested and formally approved by Cincinnati Milacron in accordance with its Lubricant Specifications (ISO 68 to 1000, respectively – P-63, 76, 77, 74, 59, 35 and 78). Gear Oil exceeds the latest AGMA Specification 9005 (replacement for 250.04) and U.S. Steel 224 Specification for enclosed gear lubricants. Gear Oil “M” series are specially formulated for use in enclosed gear sets equipped with mist lubrication systems and are approved by Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) in accordance with its Lubricant Specifications.

This Shell Gadus SV220 seems to be an EP2 rated lubricant, more research required:

Shell Gadus SV220 - multipurpose, extreme-pressure industrial greases based on a blend of high viscosity index mineral oils and a lithium hydroxystreate soap thickener and contain lead free extreme-pressure and other proven additives. Designed for grease lubrication of rolling element and plain bearings such as those found in the steel, paper, mining, quarrying and construction industries; for steel mill lubrication where a softer grease is necessary for specialized dispensing systems; heavy duty plain and rolling element bearings operating under severe conditions including shock loading in wet environments. Gearbox applications where semi-fluid greases are required.Operation over the temperature range -20°C to 100°C for bearings operating at 75% of the maximum rated speed (Can withstand up to 120°C intermittently).

Shell Gadus S2 V220 2 Performance Features: Outstanding load carrying capacity. Gadus S2 V220 2 contain special extreme-pressure additives which enable them to withstand heavy and shock loads without failure of the lubricant film. Superior mechanical stability. Compared to 'leaded' Gadus, the resistance to extended mechanical working is significantly improved. This is particularly important in vibrating environments where poor mechanical stability can lead to grease softening with subsequent loss of lubrication performance and leakage. Excellent resistance to water wash-out. Formulated to offer much improved levels of resistance to water wash-out compared to the old leaded product. Oxidation stability. Specially selected base oil components have excellent oxidation resistance. Their consistency will not alter in storage and they withstand high operating temperatures without hardening or forming bearing deposits. Excellent corrosion protection. Gadus S2 V220 2 have a strong affinity with metal and have the ability to protect bearing surfaces against corrosion, even when the grease is contaminated with water. Performance Specifications meet British Timken specification for Steel Mill applications. Re-greasing Intervals: For bearings operating near their maximum recommended temperatures, re-greasing intervals should be reviewed.

I think the weight or viscosity ratings of rating numbers '2' & '00' relate to NLGI ratings, you'll have to verify that. Info on NLGI Specifications may be found at this Wikipedia link, giving an idea of relative viscosity or thickness and liquid film strength: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NLGI_consistency_number
