The MPG claims do seem to get wilder and more exaggerated as time goes on. The Yanmar style engines are incredibly simple indirect injection engines which are designed for very reasonable fuel economy when running at a single speed all day. The fuel consumption graphs are shown in the Yanmar manuals and show that the engines do not provide good economy below 2500rpm (for the given output power) and drop off quickly also above 3200rpm. This is to be expected with fixed timing.

The couple of times I have bothered to measure my 406cc Enfield I have got in the region of 120 (imperial) mpg. It's tuned not to smoke much and I am not easy on the throttle (can you be on one of these?!).

Seriously, has anyone got even close to 180mpg?
