Hi,
Once going a 2005 Bullet with Yanmar engine* - it pulls well and seems to handle well. Once running it seems to go quite well save for one part of the bike, and I wonder if there is any adjustment....the gearbox!
(* after looking to build managed to sell some bits for a 350 enfield and acquired an ex-Trevor George creation with genuine Yanmar engine....must try and work out how to post oics for soem details... )
Is there a technique to changing gear on the enfield, or any adjustment?
Could it be the clutch?
Fortunately once in top it goes doen to >20mph and pulls away but when you need to change gear, especially downward changes it's not great........but going from 4th down the box seems to be a real problem....so worse changing down than up.
Maybe it's technique - any tips?
Regards
Mark
Gearbox or clutch adjustment maybe?

Re: Gearbox or clutch adjustment maybe?
Are you sure your clutch works properly? My (new) clutch from India is still bollocks. I guess an experienced Enfield mechanic could make it work, but it wobbles like a pizza which doesn't really help and it lifts unevenly. This results in a rather large "grey" area, and combined with Minda handles, which I'm told don't provide enough leverage (I don't know the proper word, cable not retracted enough) my clutch, and subsequently changing gears, is horrible.

Maybe it is the clutch - any tips on adjusting until I can find a Enfield manual.

From the Dutch Enfield forum, courtesy of Hans Taveerne:
1 - Maximize cable slack at the lever and halfway the clutch cable
2 - Loosen the nut on the screw inside the gearboxcover until you feel a slight pressure against the clutchrod
3 - Turn the screw back 1/4 turn
4 - Adjust cable play halfway down the clutch cable and at the lever

Re: Gearbox or clutch adjustment maybe?
Hiya,
Thx for the help...some improvement in the gearchange on the Bullet.
Fiddled with the clutch pushrod adjustment and then cable freeplay AND some technique changes and taking loooonnnnger with the gear change and things have improved.
A 30mile test and improved changes, taking more time and care with gear lever and clutch (as well as said adjustments) seem to be better {still not as easy as the Ajay and Burman, is this a 1940's design vs. a 1960's?}.
The only gear that I had trouble with was from 3rd to 2nd - found a couple of false neutrals - that maybe more technique.
Will see how it goes....must let the relaxing pace of riding the diesel perculate to the gear change technique.
Thanks again.

Can't you hook up with someone from the UK with a diesel Enfield to see if it is something you will have to live with or can still be improved?
