Hello all
My names Dan and I'm a long time lurker of this forum. I really like motorcycle touring and figured that economy wise my current mount SR500 had to me a short range. I like old bikes then I found out about Indian Enfields. They have all I'm after: 350 or 500 single right side shift 4spd and ok mileage. After more surfing the net I discovered people had been fitting Diesel engines into 'em and getting extremely good mileage. I know a Diesel powered Enfield is nothing new but heres another one to the list. Took a few months to build. The project was plenty of fun. My bro helped with all of the welding as he's pretty good at it and I made all the other bits, cables etc.
I've only got about 70kmls on Diesel so plenty of testing and long distance riding up ahead. At the moment it rides very well, much more enjoyable than in previous 350 form. For me there is not much difference performance wise between the 350 petrol and this. From what I read I was expecting it to be really slow especially up hills. Well I tell ya I was in for a surprise. For 10 horses it moves well up 15% grades. Very pleased.
Some pictures
And here's a video of it idling

Hi Dan - welcome to the forum
Cool another converted Diesel Enfield in OZ, very similar in appearance to my old beast.
You certainly need the sprung saddle seat where I live mate, the roads are totally crap and the seat has saved my back many times.
Gee! Wish I could get away with no blinkers and a straight through pipe in NSW ............
Good Job - well done

Nice conversion
Andrew, I don't think you should be envious of a straight pipe, it really is too loud even when it's not at full throttle. Or at least my Hatz is... I can't address or hear Nanko if we are on opposite sides of the machine

'92 Enfield + Hatz 1B40: street legal, weld up stainless exhaust, check engine rpm and change final drive sprocket.

doesnt you trouser leg get hit by all the smoke :O

Hey all
Thanks for the welcome and positive comments
Andrew and Sphere yeah I was thinking about the straight thru pipe, that might get changed. It's true it is quite loud, sounds great against rock faces. Thanks to a member (forgot name) on here for the idea, handrail for $10 at a scrap joint. Its made of brass!!
Igor what length would be best as the trouser leg doesn't get black. I don't know much about pipes but if the straight thru pipe gets longer and same diameter, will it get quieter? I think not.

Re: Hello from Adelaide, Aus
actually, it would get a little quieter if it was longer...
naturally as a pipe gets longer, the gases slow down more when they get to the end, so the noise drops...
Granted though, it wouldnt be much different if the pipe was run to the back compared to the current position
If you want to silence it a little bit, but like to look of the straight through pipe (so no big can on the end)
I dont know anywhere in Australia, but here in the UK you can get these style exhausts:
http://www.motorbikepartsdirect.co.uk/p ... rnout/252/
http://www.motorbikepartsdirect.co.uk/p ... horty/248/
http://www.motorbikepartsdirect.co.uk/p ... h-cut/249/
http://www.motorbikepartsdirect.co.uk/p ... pered/251/
They arent very big, but they do take away a bit of the noise...
You can repack them, either immediately or when the standard packing wool gets clogged with diesel soot, with steel wool...
Might be an idea for you...
