Ruggerini Dnepr
Hi,
I am finally making progress with my diesel project!
It is a Ruggerini RD 210 engine in a Dnepr frame....
At the moment, I am mounting the engine inside of the frame.
I have the next weeks off so I can continue working on it.
There are a lot more pictures and details in my blog: http://blog.fnordpol.de/
best regards
Hans

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
Hi,
The frame stand is Zwettle beer. It has a propper height for the frame.
Today I finished the top torque support, welded on the mounts of the bottom torque suport, and the sidecar mount. The foot rests are pointed on, hopefully all weldings which need the engine outside of the bike are finished now!
Tomorrow I will build the rest of the bottom torque support, weld the foot rests and the engine mounts put back the engine into the frame. I still hope that I can do a first testrun soon the time is short!
best regards
Hans

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
Hi,
I don't need the Beer boxes any more so I can get the deposit back. The Bike is featured by two wheels now.
Even with that enhanced frame you can sit upright on it.
I have to finish lots of details now. The tank must be placed. The Battery mounted ans the Spedometer build on.
best regards
Hans

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
Locomotivebreath on this board put a small Lawnmower style fuel tank on the side of the Dnepr between the bike and the hack. He left off the conventional fuel tank since there was no room with out cutting the tank and reshaping it.
Just a thought for you to consider.
My thought was to turn tank area into storage. Keep tank's shape but hollow it out around the engine below it, if possible. Put a small storage box inside under tank. Hinge at one end of tank, lock on the other. Swing lock side of tank up to access the storage space you created where the tank's cell once was. Probably should glue/braze the fuel cap shut though... so you dont forget and coat your stored items with diesel.

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
That bike looks kind of familiar; I ride one that looks almost the same. You’re going to have so much fun. I like the no tank look, and watching the motor as I ride. The tank I have now is off the Ruggerini RD211 from my Honda. The spin on fuel filter is incorporated with the tank, something to think about.
I get about 100-120km before I need more fuel, and on long rides I carry couple of 1 gallon jugs with me.
People ask about my tank and the bike being different, I smile, and tell them, my bike is different.
Good Luck,
Dave
P.S. I just noticed this is my 200th post, do win a prize?

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
At the moment I have the option either to modify an Ural tank or modify a 10l reserve canister to use it as a tank.
I decided for the canister. When I bought the motor there never was the original tank on it, so I don't have one.
Today I also welded a some patches on a thrown away car exhaust, to build it on the bike.
best regards
Hans

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
Quick fuel disconnects costs about 30,- € I would need two of them. So they are canceled at the moment.
I think I will need to unarm the mounting band a little bit, but that's the tank.
I like my exhaust system!

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
I will make it to Hamm that is sure, but I still don't know if the Machine does.
- The front fender is scratching on the wheel
- The sidecar is still not mounted
- no breaks
- no lights
- no speedometer
And finally I don't know how it will be on the road!
I have four days left to solve all these issues. That is a very athletic timetable, I will propably fail.
Anyway this is a great step for my project.

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
Yesterday I mounted the sidecar from my Ural, and modified the Dnepr footbrake so it can operate the Ural sidecar breaks. It is not completely done yet, it will take some additional work during the day to get all the breakes working.
I also found out that my batterys are to small for the starter! So I need to modify my Battery holder again and build in a bigger battery.
After all I need to set up all the elektricity stuff! I still hope that I can do some rideouts on wednesday. If everything went fine I can start to hamm on thursday.
Update (17:15):
The breaks are clear, but I will start to take the motor out of the Bike now!
The gearbox adapter starts to make noises. I must know why that happens.

stupid mounting faults
It startet by a squicky sound coming out of the engine on shutdown. I started my investigation near the gearbox adapter and found out that the sound is there when either the engine is stopped or the bike is moved. So I made the theorie that I can’t hear the sound when the engine is running.
So I build out the engine and loked inside the gearbox adapter:
Notice the screw on the bottom……
When I made my first test runs with the engine I did not used any locktite because it was only a test run. After success I never unmounted the clutch. There was not even any locktite on the clutch screws.
God for me anyway today I know about the function of spring washers so I can use them together with locktite, and mount that correctly.

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
I made a short rideout with my bike today, 9 km. I need to adjust the clutch and lost one of my cable crimping tools which I forgot on my sidecar before I left.

yeahhhh... moving right along.
Love the old blue truck utility box you use for storage. One w/the fold down sides. Is your shop also a former Truck box? Such things catch my eye cause Im a Unimog nut.
Bike looks and sounds great. Allways kind thunk of the Ural's and Dnepr's as Shrunk two (or 3) wheeleld Unimogs LOL.

Hi Zem,
You could do as I did and mount a car battery in the sidecar boot. I threaded the battery cables inside washing machine water hoses(no chance of shorting) used rubber grommets where they passed through the boot floor and led them up to the bike. The battery weight in the car makes for better control of the rig.
John.

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
I don't want to mount anything to the sidecar which is important for the bike. Also there is no space in the sidecar because I want to keep it's cargo capacity. Fortunately I solved the battery/starter problem.
The first thing I tried was to mount a second battery to the bike which unfortunately explodes a little bit when I prepare to leave to Hamm. The engine starts with one battey, too, if the battery is fully charged. So I decided to carry a car battery and starter cables in the sidecar. During the first km to Hamm the charge controller broke so I tried around a little bit and I fortunately figured out, how to use the kickstarter with that engine.
Kickstarting the engine if the batteries are flat is my preferred solution but everybody else, I talked to, says: That is impossible! In fact, there are wholes for decompression levers but no decompression levers on that engine. So I need to find some levers to make kickstarting practical.
Unfortunately after 160 km near Linz the gearboxadapter makes noises again, so I hat to turn around, go back to vienna and took my petrol bike to go to the ralley in Hamm.

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
After I unmounted the gearbox and clutch, I found nothing, so I spend my day in some remeasure activitys.
On the good side I propably found the solution for some vibrations on higher rpm near the footrests, it seems that the russian flywheel is not balanced. Because I only have an improvised balance axis I will check that tomorrow again on a professional one.
Now to the bad side! The gearbox adapter is fucked up, take a look:
The view of the flywheel position a few mm higher than the centring ring for the gearbox, unfortunately, does not depend on the angle of the camera...
I did not expect that much difference in the adapter. Twoi years ago AFAIR it was centric. I will have to do that adaption part again.... s**t!

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
Shouldn't you have flywheels and the bigger size rearwheels dynamically balanced? Or is that what you are planning on?

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
What exactly do you mean with dynamical balanced?
They should be balanced every time you modify them, with a new tire for example on the rear wheel or when you modify the flywheel. As far as I know, if no part of the wheel shows a tendency to rotate to the bottom it is well balanced.
My flywheel rotates to a dab of paint on the wheel. So it is either not well balanced or the rotating axis is failing.
But well, the modification was done by a professional so it should have been balanced after the modification.

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
You can balance a wheel (passively), so that it will not start turning from gravitational pull from an arbitrary position, but when rotating it may still vibrate. Dynamic balancing should take care of that as well.

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
Ah, do you mean a second balancing of the whole system with flywheel and pistons and the clutch together?
I also thought about it and came to the conclusion that I don't need to do that, because in that case I whould need to balance the whole system everytime when I work on it, because the russian flywheel has no position mark.
I think it will be enough to have the single components well (statically) balanced, I will try that first. Those upper RPM Vibrations I try to find are only in the footrests near the Russian not at the front of the Motor or the rest of the Bike. If they will not go away by balancing I can still mount my footrests to another place.

Re: Ruggerini Dnepr
The gearbox adapter parts arrived today from the water jet table!
It costs about 60,- € including the Material (6 mm steel) and took about 3 hours of work to produce the CAD drawings.
