Shaft drive or chain drive bike?

Easiest tranny to adapt into these is a CVT. Close second is a Harley Ulitma

Sam Brumby's yer man.

Nice to see the ripple effect from doing the show.

He should be along in a bit, with all the gory details of the 3 speed rotavator gearbox.

Yes, Uttoxeter might have a lot to answer to, by the way, Diesel Dave were you there, with the Tiger? And are you one and the same off the Bullet Mania yahoo site? If so, nice to meet, and you might remember me from that site and it is no other then my 500 bullet Victoria that might be sacrificed on the altar of chip oil!

Yes the superdream has a yanmar chain driven to an Albion 3 speed gearbox, I believe the box was off a rotorvator, positional change hence the hand gear change. As well as the chain to the box there is a vbelt to the altenator which is a denso off a nissan starlet.

Some of the older motorbikes used Albion gearboxes....

With a lever running up to the side of the tank, that you moved between 2 or more positions...

Rotovators and similar started using up the old stock and then producing their own copies of Albion gearboxes from the motorbikes...
They are basically the same thing.

The gearbox was designed in the 20's or 30's I believe...

Good gearbox.

I keep my eye open for that style gearbox for when I can build a diesel bike...

Have you got any pictures of you bike Sam? I cant remember seeing any :S
And what sort of speed do you get on your bike?

Sam, given your Superdreams Diesel spec, would you recommend Matt does what you did or do you think he should squeeze in a bigger capacity engine for more pulling power :?: I know that bike has amazing MPG figures but you said it would benefit from a few more 'horses' if I remember right.

Speed power and economy are all relavent. The bike would easily take a 10 horse. But would the albion box and clutch take it, not sure? Certainly the primary chain would take a beating as its not running in oil.

Shouldn't any discussion about low horsepower engines be preceded by a discussion about gearboxes with more than 3 speeds? The little horsepower these engines produce is much better turned into forward motion by as many gears as you can fit in the frame, don't you think?

But sometimes you can only use what you can find...

The albion 3 speed gearbox should take 10~12hp easily enough...

The primary chain might take a bit more of a beating, but it will save the gearbox...

And you can always rig up a cover with an oil feed into the top to oil the chain and then a catchment system at the bottom to a small canister so the oil doesnt run everywhere....

They were used in motorbikes with the villiers 250 2 stroke in the 40's and 50's which were kicking I believe around 15hp...
