Hi'all,

My real name is Frank de Lange. As ersatz-Swede (originally from the Netherlands) I live on a small farm somewhere between Göteborg and Trollhättan in Sweden. My username might give an idea of what I'm here for: I'm going to build myself a diesel-powered Ural with sidecar. The current Ural works fine but it uses the wrong fuel and uses to much of it. As it - together with my regular bicycle - is my only means of transportation here in the Swedish countryside I'd like it to be reliable and strong enough for hauling a trailer. Speed is of less importance, if it can do 90 km/h I'm satisfied. The plan is to run it on whatever oily stuff I can get my hands on, from home-grown rapeseed oil to liquefied dinosaurs.

I'm currently looking for an engine to fit my budget as well as the bikes size, power needs and also looks. Those Chinese V2 diesels seem to fit the bill best so I might just try to get my one to five of those - depending on minimum order quantity. I might also try to setup a co-op buy together with other diesel builders to get around the sometimes overly enthusiastic minimum order quantities... Of course I will first read around here (and elsewhere) to see if anyone has any experience with these engines.

there have been a few use the chinese V2 engines...

from what I remember they seem to have problems...

Hmmm, problems. What doesn't have problems... If I were afraid of 'm I'd be in the wrong spot here, right?

Now if 'problems' means 'dies after 1000 km' or 'my little sister is stronger' or 'drinks more than Boozah' then I agree, those are problems. If it is just a matter of taking 'm apart, taking out the sand left over from the casting process and putting 'm back together again I'll bite.

Are those conversions on the forum? I'll have a look, any pointers would be helpful though... loads of pages, little time...

Welcome Oer al :D The engines you talk of are ok if you get a good one. Some suffer from vibration quite badly and crack the crankcase. We've seen them welded up though :D You have to weigh the benefit of a cheap engine against all the effort you are about to put in. If I were you I would try for a more expensive Yanmar Twin perhaps :?:

Ah, but *which* of the many Chinese manufacturers to choose? Longfar, another Longfar, Nantong/Punsun, Fuzhou, Punsun and probably many others...

Can I ask why you have your mind set on the Chinese V2's?

I dont know if prices etc are different is sweden, but in the UK for the price you can get a Chinese v2, you can get a second hand kubota or lombardini twin...

you say you are on a budget, would a small car engined ural be better?

over here it seems cheaper to buy older small car diesels :S...
you can often get things like the peugeot 106 1.5 diesel and the ford 1.8 diesels in a complete car for less than £150~£200...

the fuel economy would be pretty good... in the car you would be looking at 60 miles per gallon (imperial)
probably 70~80 in a sidecar outfit...

and to be honest, I might be wrong, but I could see a 20hp v twin diesel stationary engine, struggling to haul a sidecar outfit along with a trailer on the back....

the other thing using a small car diesel is you would be looking at 50+hp and maximum rpm of 4500~5000rpm...
compared to 3600rpm standard on the stationary engines.

Well, I'm not really *set* on those V2's (vergeltungswaffen 2?) but they seem to fit the application quite well. Small car engines (Lupo, Daihatsu) are available but usually quite a lot more expensive - a running Lupo engine with all salient bits like ECU costs more than 20000 kronor at the wrecker. Daihatsu diesel cars did not seem to be popular here I have yet to find one. The Daihatsu industrial diesel version of that engine is available in generators etc, so I'm also looking for used versions of those - can get a 300+ kg beast for 10000 kronor right now. There's about 11.50 kronor to the ₤UKP and 7.80 to the $USD so that generator (with Daihatsu 3cyl industrial engine) runs at app ₤870 / $1280. Moped car engines are also available but those seem underpowered for this application. They are usually 2 cylinder 400-500cc Lombardini / Kubota / etc. engines somewhat over 10 hp. They cost between 8500 kronor and 20000+ kronor, the former usually without some essential bits.

I can get a new Chinese V2 for less than what those engines cost. It would probably have enough power for my purposes, would hopefully fit in the frame without having to extend it and would look more like a motorcycle than a FrankenDiesel. Now as my name is Frank the latter might be what I should aim for so I'll just leave it to fate which engine I can get my hands on first.

If anyone knows of a good source for used small car engines some affordable transport distance from Sweden let me know. Big diesels are readily available here but the smaller car engines are few and far in between, at least where I have looked...

I think one of the guys in Hamm mentioned Kipor as a good and cheap clone engine supplier. he should know, he worked for Hatz! 8) Might be worth checking them out :?:

I'll give them an extra eye... Just going through the list of Chinese / Bangladeshi / Indian / South Korean engines @ alibaba, I wonder what it means when they state they can supply '10 engines per month' - it gives me visions of a shabby old barn where someone is sand-casting crankcases between the pigs and chickens... That is probably not that far from the truth, minus those pigs/chickens...

Also of course still looking for used engines, plenty of 2.5l and bigger available, not that many smaller than 1.6 / 110 kg... There is a complete Smart Diesel car available though for 35000 kronor, looks like new...

Any updates on your engine search?
'92 Enfield + Hatz 1B40: street legal, weld up stainless exhaust, check engine rpm and change final drive sprocket.
