hello there!
i've come across one thermoking yanmar with 2 cylinders and one with 4, in a scrapyard over here. I think i could get them cheap. does anybody know the specs of the 486 (displacement, weight, hp power, revs)? The 235 i think is 586cc large and gives 10 hp power, but i haven't been apble to find it's weight.
Anyway do you think that they could do for a bike or is it out of the question?
Thank you all!
any info for yanmar thermoking 235 and 486 ??

I don't know any specifics on these engines, but you would have to check whether they have variable speed governors, or if they are set for a constant rpm...probably slower than you would want for a motorcycle. However, I wouldn't be surprised if a constant speed engine of this size could be modified to hook onto your twist-grip. Like cut a piece of lockwire on the injector pump or something. Reefer engines regularly run over 20000hours, so if you could get them for practically free, it might be a good gamble, but I wouldn't pay too much for them.

The 235 would be a good pick. I am using a yanmar 395. aka TNE72K. They will work in a motorcycle. The lever on the pump controls rpm and just hook that up to the twist grip. Turn the fuel up and maby a gt12 or smaller size turbo. Should make good power. The 486 is a big hunk and hard to adapt to use in a bike. The govenor automaticly keeping the selected rpm is actually a neat feature and just takes a little geting used to, especialy when you hear the turbo spool up when it begins to increase fuel with a load.

Agreed. The 4-86 is a Yanmar 4TNE86 but it's a tank. Also, the TK spec has a massive oil pan for extended duty cycles.
I believe the 2-35 is a Yanmar 2TN66 and could be a great candidate for a small diesel bike project. The TK units do have constant speed governors but even that is adjustable. You could do it by yourself but it would be smarter to take the pump to a diesel injection repair company. They can tune it for variable speed use.

thank you all very much for your replies. The thing is that it's constant governor (the 235 unit specifically) does give concerns. I haven't spotted any diesel injection repair company (small diesels are a bit rare around here). Do you have any idea if i could do that myself and how? do i need special parts?
