Hello again
Has anyone got a weight figure for the Ford Endura D engine (1.8 idi diesel, non turbo, Lucas/CAV fuel pump)?
If you only have to weight with the gearbox attached, don't worry
On a similar note, working on a kerb weight of 1.2 tons (1200kg), anyone got a rough idea how much an early 90's Ford Escort van with the above engine would weigh if the van was cut in half just behind the seats (thats why I am working on the kerb weight, as there will be no load bed to allow for )
I currently only have a bike license, so I can only ride a trike up to 410kgs. Thats why I was thinking of cutting it in half (and the back isnt the best :S)
Roughly trying to work out the weight I would say the back would weight between 400 and 600 kgs (at the most) which might sound alot, but the structural design to accomodate the weight is why I have reckoned on that weight. The problem is, that would put the rest of the vehicle (the bit I want as a reverse trike) at 600~800 kgs, which is alot more that I can ride on a bike license...
If its not a viable option, I will most likely use the engine to build a sand rail/beach buggy style vehicle...
Which would mean putting the engine/gearbox at the back of a frame and simply welding/bolting the steering bars to the main frame...
Any thoughts?

Re: Ford Endura D Weight
When I saw your post I initially thought 250kg though I can't find any sources to back that up and can't remember where I thought I heard that from. I remember looking at this a while ago though. Used to have a mk3 fiesta with this engine in. Cast iron block makes it pretty heavy though if you have one maybe you could weigh it to confirm what it is?

Re: Ford Endura D Weight
:S Thats a bit more than I was expecting tbh...
I remember Nanko said his Peugeot TUD5 (cast iron block) 1.5 diesel was 110kg
I was expecting 120~150kg for the engine...
Just need to fit a different gearbox to it really (would be easier for a bike really )
I dont really fancy trying to weld up the diff :S
The more and more I think of it though, the more a reverse trike is going to be the better option

as mentioned i may be talking out of my hat about weight but remember it was heay. its hard to get that sort of info tbh. best to weigh it probably. good wee engine tho, was fine on veg oil. just have to make sure cambelt is good on them.

Good on vegetable oil? :S
Mine wont be, its got the Lucas/CAV fuel pump, which dont like wvo/svo etc
Kills the seals on them.
I haven't got a method of weighing it at the moment
Once I can get it out though, the only method I could use to weigh it, is to go to a public weighbridge...
Oh well, something's just aren't meant to be I suppose...
I think a reverse trike will be built
Straight through vertical stack, with a flap , unless I get moaned at for volume, then a tractor silencer would be fitted
Either that, or anyone got a fairly cheap method of fitting it into a bike frame, with a gearbox (not CVT, I dont want one )

Re: Ford Endura D Weight
Dont think seals are an issue. Pretty sure they can be upgraded. It's my understanding that it is more of the rotary pump's shaft breaking. Last I read on it, the prevailing thought was circling around thermal shock causing failure of the shaft. Some various ways were being experimented with to alleviate the issue.IgorVigor wrote:Good on vegetable oil? :S

Re: Ford Endura D Weight
The theories I have heard are that due to it being a rotary pump (unlike the Bosch inline pumps) the thicker wvo/svo even when mixed with diesel causes the pumps to strain more and blow the seals.
Even to the point that agri-diesel (red/green etc depending on where you are) will cause the pumps to fail eventually...
(I know this as I know a few people who use the diesel car engines for either field cars/farm transport or to drive pumps etc)
They all try and get bosch pumps for that reason. If they use an engine with a Lucas/CAV they use it until it breaks, and then fit a bosch pump :S
Anyway, I wouldn't be too worried about using wvo/svo really.
Its more for the sound of an unsilenced N/A diesel with some load and a few revs behind it
(grown up around old tractors/lorries, etc , so love big old engines, that arent strung up with emmisions etc, and sod all, if any silencing )
