Hey all, how are we doing? I found another doner bike for another bike project, and I've linked Dieselbike.net into my eBay auction, so Stuart, I hope you don't mind. I like to getting the word out.

I came home the other day and my neighbor had this bike on his trailer heading for his longtime storage, I asked if it was for sale, he quickly said a $100 at it was mine. It had sat awhile, but a little elbow grease, she cleaned up rather nice. A 1981 Honda CB650, looks like an excellent candidate for a 10hp Yanmar Diesel Conversion. I'll keep all informed with my progress.

I called Roy from Quality Drive Services about my CVT, and last week he was up in my area testing another 1190 series set up like mine on an ATV w/140hp. He wants to come up and look at my setup, so I will give you all the heads up. I also learned the Team Industries driven pulley and the 1190 gave a top ratio of .9-1 vs. the .68-1 as a stock driven pulley and belt length was a concern. I seeing the tean Industries Pulley might not be needed and a stock drivin puller will work just fine with a $200 price savings.

The Honda has a stock final drive ratio of 2.5-1 (16/40) #50 o-ringed chain, I'd like to know what others are running with a 10hp engine.

I can tell you that 2.5 to 1 is way too tall a ratio, try 4.5 to 1 for your final drive using the 10 hp clone engine. I'm running 16 tooth jackshaft and 70 tooth rear sprocket on my GS850 conversion, and this will just get you by with limited power output of the clone engine. Also, it's much easier on the Comet drive unit.

Cris...what top speed does that drive ratio get you to?

I can run about 50/55 max with a good tail wind. Most of the time, I run around 45. These little engines just run out of breath at their top end.

What engine is Dave putting in that CB frame? I am trying to figure out where the threshold is for horsepower, but I am guessing that depends on the drive train correct? The taller the gearing the higher the horsepower needs for getting out of the gate.

Terry Martin's green John Deere retrofitted harley uses aftermarket harley primary and tranny and can get speeds and ride two-up with his engine? Is he using a much bigger motor?

The engine I'm using in this project is a Ruggerini RD211. I've decide on a gear ratio to start testing. With a 14/40 final drive ratio and a primary ratio of 6”/7”, this will give me a 3.333:1. With the factory 25.215" tall tire, I'm looking at 55 mph @ 2500 rpm, with a top speed of close to 80 mph.

I see I will have to do some changing down the road, but this bike is just a test vehicle.

My ultimate goal will be the use of the Honda GL1800 final drives I have and I'm looking into building a Diesel Electric Motorcycle in the future.

One problem I see that I will have to tackle is the massive flywheel effect with the weight of the Centrifugal clutch and 3 groove iron sheave will achieve when up to speed. This will work against me during braking, so lighter components will have to be fabricated in the future.

Like I say, this is just a test vehicle to see how this one speed clutch/final drive system will work in this application.
