OCC Diesel Chopper
Well those boys over at OCC finally came round to our way of thinking and built a Diesel engined Chopper. Checkout the links below:

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
Funny thing here, paul sr. of occ is my neighbor. After me riding by for the past 7 months, tinkering and just having fun with the bike he decides to build one. Thats fine, more diesels the better. Although I was quite annoyed when he said " only diesel chopper ever made" . Even if he has not found this website, he knows his neighbor has one, and most chances are got the idea to build one from me. I think he should have done some research before saying that, and will probably take credit for work many of us have done before

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
the OCC folks just keep doing things to make me respect them less and less. They can make some art bikes that look great, kudo's to their painters and finishers, but I would much rather ride yours. I'll try and catch the show. Hope it doesn't piss me off more when I watch it. On the plus side, I belive their show has made a lot of people realise that if those idiots can build a bike, a lot more people can assemble a bike in their own garage. More diesel bikes is great, I just hope they don't get the credit for every diesel bike on the road.

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
I guess that regardless of what they say, the resulting publicity can only be good in that it lets the general public see that Diesel engine's can be viable in bikes. Given their mass audience on TV this may well be the push that persuades the doubters out there that it's acceptable to build this kind of machine. You'd be surprised how many think it isn't. Maybe it will take someone as big as them to give the whole scene some kind of credability Expect to see a few more in BSH some time soon
If OCC do give an extra push to something we've been advocating for years and help us reach a 'tipping point' then maybe they can be forgiven any spin I, for one, can't wait to see the program on this build though
This is supposed to lead to Paul Snr talking about the bike but I can't get it to work. Can anyone extract the sound file?

Be nice to have some facts on the engine etc..

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
From what i was told its a 3 cyl turbocharged briggs&stratton diahatsu. No engine modifications.
I hope this publicity does us good. What i hope is that they are not credited (in the common publics minds) with the invention of the custom diesel motocycle. They carry a poor stigma around here, and it would not please me to have us seem as occ copy cats.
Other than that, i would love to see a bunch more diesel bikes running about in the US, we all learn and build off each other so more bikes = new tech and ideas, and thats allways welcome.

Interview was about the gas/electric hybrid they built. He spoke of the diesel bike though and called the diesel more practical in reality of production compared to the gas/electric hybrid.Stuart wrote:...

They will put info about the build on the show. Hard to tell in the interview if he meant it would be on OCC this Thursday or next episode after that. The hybrid is this thurs.... possible both bikes though.
Note... could not find a date on the interview so the Thursday episode may have come and gone by now orrr??? Anyone know the date he was on David Letterman w/the Hybrid Bike. this interview was like the next morning?? so knowing the Letterman date might help us figure time lines out.

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
In fairness, the article posted says 'Once on the stage, “Sr” as he is known by viewers, explained that the “Monster Chopper” was the first diesel engine motorcycle Orange County Choppers has ever built.' Having said that I can see how they'd end up being construed as the first full-stop by the public.
As Stuart says though, its all good PR for diesel bikes. I don't know about you but when I started my project a lot of folks nay-sayed it from the start "it'll never work" and "diesels are heavy and slow" etc. Perhaps this will fire the imagination and show what can be done beyond the standard-issue stuff turned out by the manufacturers? On the other hand I am sure a few of us like being out of the mainstream. Either way we'll be able to say we were there from the start!

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
Well said Neil,
As I've said in the past we will either be heralded as the vanguard of motorcycling's future or fade into obscurity as the petrol bike fuel efficiencies overtake us.
Remember the newer fuel injected bikes are now challenging our fuel consumption / speed trade off's (ref. the article on Dieselkrad over the Honda ANF 125i, and the new Royal Enfield fuel injected 500 achieving 110 mpg in mixed riding including motorways at 75mph).
For myself I'm extremely glad to be part of this community, it's small and inventive, personal and creative but if every bike on the road was a diesel, I'd be experimenting with LPG/coal/wood gas or something similar.
All of the issues we are addressing by strapping stationary/old car engines to motorcycle chassis could be outstripped by a simple experimental bike from a major manufacturer and it would not be very hard for then to do with modern computer prototyping. Ally casings, hi-flow blower, common rail ECU control would be sooooooo easy to do; plug the nunbers into the computer and voila a commuter that does 50mph and 250mpg, or an adventure bike that has a 1000 km range and can carry 200 kilo's of luggage, or a tourer that can wear out a tyre before needing refueling. The problem is there is no commercial need for such development and we live in a consumer economic society - things need to have a finite lifespan and encourage us to buy the next generation.
Lets not kid ourselves, we are could be outstripped in a heatbeat if the economics worked out.
Rant over

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
Ok, so hats off for OCC then if they didn't claim to be first. Welcome onboard them guys I tweeted Paul Jr but no response. I hear they're not talking? It was a master stroke for Snr to cause the friction and give the show an edge to start with but not when it splits the family in the long run. I wish them well anyway
At the risk of changing the thread topic petrol is a finite resorce innit? And contains less power than fuel oil? And the ethonal is exspensive and uses food crop? And if veg oil is more plentiful? I welcome the competition from petrol/gasoline, Dave. But I concur with the military planners - Oil wins in my book

Haha, it'd be great if the occ guys signed up to the forum. I think Dave hits the nail on the head, part of whats great about diesel bikes is that they are still rare. I'm off to see if "steambike.net" is available....

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
I couldn't see how the engine was mounted, or much of the detail- was the engine mounted transverse or inline? I hope that I can see the show, or at least get to see it on the 'net. I'll bet they will get much flak from Paul Sr.'s boast of being the "only"- don't they keep up with bikes in general to see what is out there being built?
Not exactly the best looking bike I've seen of theirs. My Dad's neighbor had one of their "production" bikes- parts kept falling off and I heard that the guy who was servicing the machine got really tired of working on it. The owner finally sold it. I wasn't crazy with the finish either, looked like it was cobbed together. For example, where the fenders were bolted on the bolt heads wore the paint away- woulda thought they would have used a nylon washer under the bolt head to protect the paint. Plus some of the paint looked rough- either orange peel or some dirt or something underneath. Not something that I would have paid all that money for.
I was thinking of building a steam motorcycle some day, but can't seem to get my Diesel finished. This is my favorite, I have a copy of an early book on "horseless carriages" that has this one detailed: http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org/classics/bike.asp?id=3 There's been plenty built, though. A guy built a near-exact copy of the Roper bike- it is on youtube. Maybe build one fueled by dried cow dung???? The ultimate "green machine"?
That must be kinda cool being their neighbor though, do you get to dig through their dumpster?
I hope they used plenty of Loctite on that OCC thing! If not that'd really get Papa Teutul swearing and throwing things.

In this video at 1:30 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNmfrt1DihQ he says it. He has seen mine before so there is no doubt.
Their bikes are of poor construction, ive seen many up close. Worst was one where the headtube did not meet the downtube properly and had a gap, it was just filled with about 18mm of nasty weld.

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
I saw that video, seems like (as usual) Sr. doesn't quite know what to say and so put his foot in his mouth. A sloppily constructed headstock is scary, there are quite a few forces trying to rip the fork off a bike. Back in the day I saw a few choppers where the headstock was cut and either welded together with the usual "buzz box" bird-poop weld or brazed together with a butt joint and then appropriately filled with Bondo. I think the body filler had more strength than the welds sometimes used, it is a miracle there weren't any mishaps (at least among my cronies).

Ok just heard it (after my speaker driver needed re-installing!). I agree with the folks there and everyone else - it could have been better put over. I guess there is a difference to recording stuff and saying it out live & loud. Editors rule I think.
Still glad they built one though
Any ideas on how us guys across the pond could get to see this episode? There is a ten minute limit to stuff on YouTube. But I've seen shows split into segments.

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
Not realy a fan of OCC. Its just a TV programme, and a pretty boring one at that. Formular is always the same, Get a commission for a bike with a theme. Get a frame always rigid back end put in harley box, S&S engine, have someone cut out some fancy wheels from a big chunk of aluminium. Weld on loads of bits in the theme, ladders , axes ,bullets, bombs, chains, spiders webs etc etc etc. Have most of them chromed, powder coat. Then present the bike, probably the person gets the bike for nothing or at a knock down price as the TV rights are the most valuable thing.
For me they are just rat bikes with chrome. I would guess most OCC bikes will never clock up 5000miles. As for the Monster Diesel, I presume its some kind of addative for cold climates, a bit of petrol works also.
I am not a fan of junkyard wars also, but I find it slightly more entertaining.

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
Forward-facing exhaust designed to throw exhaust in the riders face?
Nice.
Nothing like a practical design to forward the diesel revolution, comrades.
Conceptually, OCC has become a little formulaic, much like their TV show. Practically? I don't think they got there yet and while the exposure won't do the diesel bike sector any harm, I rather doubt anyone will remember it a fortnight after the program airs..

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
Don't you guys in the UK feel bad about missing the show (for now), I am working tonight and won't see it either. Oh well, I don't think that we will be missing any great pointers on how to power a bike with Diesel.
There are a number of websites that have full episodes and are pretty up to date, but I found at least one that tries to load some useless computing speed-robbing toolbar before you can view the programs. I think that I'll wait for the re-run on the boob-tube (or should I now say boob-panel?)

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
I think this link will get ya' to the US TLC schedule- The Monster Diesel bike will air quite a few times this page shows to Feb 5th. I guess they air their shows numerous times. Shows how much I've watched it lately! I started watching when the series began, but I got tired of the same problems rearing their ugly heads every week, like "powder coating in the bolt holes" and at the last minute someone has to get a hand drill with a step-drill bit and ream it out. Seemed pretty lame, plus didn't like the way Sr. treated the guys who were really the brains and braun doing the real work. The show went to less building and more drama bull$#!t which I already get my fill of at work.

The Goombaghs Unveil their Monster Diesel Bike on channel 280 (TLC on Directv) at 800pm Central time.
I can't believe I actually programmed my TV too watch it!!!!!!!1
This will be the first time I've actually watched an episode since the first season.
The Show has too much Dysfunctional Drama for me.
All thier crap builds are just like gay window dressing to me. Chrome this, Paint that.
I understand the real tallent, Vinnie, finally had enough and split. All the real bike parts building talent they farm out.
But, they did stick with their TV Formula.
Yell, Bitch, Throw Stuff, then, somewhere along the way build something.
I like the Chopper You built here FIRST!
Would have like to see it in something other than a rigid though.
Make my back hurt just thinking about it!

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
there went an hour of my life I will never get back. Only details given on the bike is it's a 34hp Briggs turbo diesel. I might have to do some research on the Monster additive, not just go by the but makers sales pitch. Stanadyne and power service have worked for me so far. The PS being easier to find and get for me.

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
Yep, that was disapointing! Now I remember why I don't watch that show.
For a Motorcycle Building Show all the Comedy Club, BBQ Smoker build, new wife and kids and Dog Park sure didn't show much of the Topic Build. (Shaking head) HOLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think we'd be better served to scrounge up some pictures of their "First Diesel Bike" build (Insert Sarcastic Laugh here) and figure out what the heck they did. I figure with all their builds with Harley Transmissions they'd have a boat load of different parts to choose from to make it work.
I did like the Belt Cover they made! Pretty fancy
But I have to ask! How stupid was that exhaust? Maybe they should have pointed it at their face for a real tough guy effect! And don't they know how to build something with suspension. After watching Senior muck up the forks I'm thinking NOT!
Oh well. That show could be cancelled tomorrow and I wouldn't shed a tear.

Re: OCC Diesel Chopper
That show was indeed terrible, and shows the lack of tallent. Give any one of us that budget and tooling, and the outcome would be superb. Routing an exhaust is a problem that must be overcome, not just "ah f-it stick it right here in the riders face".
