A New Diesel Bike Is Born

Post by LocomotiveBreath »

My new bike, it's either a Honda CB954-D, or a Hoggerini. What do you think, my first attempt with my one speed Centrifigul Clutch experiment.

:D Nice work, Dave :D For what it's worth I think 'Hoggerini' has a much better ring to it :)

Very nice.

Does the diesel oil pan sit at about the same height off the ground as the stock engine?

Oil Pan

Post by LocomotiveBreath »

Hello Byrd,

Yes, I will have plenty of clearence. The Honda engine sat below the lower frame rails, and the Honda exhaust was below that. She fits in really sweet. I see a ground clearance of between 5.5"-7". Also I'm almost sure that there will be a weight savings as the Honda engine/transmission weighs equal if not more than the Ruggerini w/clutch-jack shaft.

Hi, could you just clarify how the transmision you plan to use works? I see your centrifugal clutch will transmit via tripple Vbelt. You talk about a jack shaft, I think we would call it a leyshaft.

Jack shaft, leyshaft, layshaft

Post by LocomotiveBreath »

I will place the Jackshaft/leyshaft behind engine, I'm looking at pulleys/sheaves 6.3"-7.7" diameter, and keeping the stock 50 sized sprocket located at or near the stock location. Gearing it @ or near 70-75 mph @3600 rpm

The Ruggerini RD211 (954cc) makes 40 ft'lbs torque and 33 ft lbs @ clutch engagement of 1400 rpm.

And a Layshaft is the handled shaft on an EMD powered locomotive that over-rides the throttle, used on start up of the prime mover on the locomotive.

I used to be a Railroad engineer for a time for the YSL railroad (1992-1994) I'm very familure with #131's layshaft as #132 and #133 were still not in an operational state. The 44 ton locomotive (#50) had 2 ea 250hp cummins engines, I also did all inspections and repair on the railroad, locomotives, and cars, we had 4 full time people, 27 miles of main line and my garage was our fabrication shop.
