Where are you from?

Post by sbrumby »

Just an idea I would like to float for your comments. I think it would be good to know where the posts are comeing from ie. country. The tendancy is for people to have rediculous names that are longer than a Welsh station and mean nothing to anybody other than the poster, I have no problem with that if you need to be addressed by a rediculous name so be it. But what I think what would be good would be a small flag by the posters name so you know what they are talking about and how best to ansewer. ie. metric, imperial, miles, kilometers, us gallons, imperial, euros, pounds, dollars.

I fully agree Sam. I've found myself having to ask a poster's location at times when they're asking for help. So, I've edited my signature to include my name and location with each post. Seems to be the only place we can add it so that it's included consistently. We'll see if it works as soon as I hit the submit.

if you look to your right.... no gooff... on the screen   ..... next to each post.... there is the more detailed information including location of poster. (if they entered it  )

just edited my profile to show USA for ya'lls viewing pleasure :P . Rest is the same. Bet our USA city/state names give you folk on the other side of the ocean no clue about what country we are from as does the city/state names of where you live give us Americans no clue. hmmm and that sentenced got so messed up I have no clue what it says.... LOL

Everyone please put your country in the location area of your profile even if you also have city/state there.

Sam, apparently this is super bleeding edge phpbb 3.0.6 functionality. Perhaps Neil can comment what version "we" are on.

This depends on one's boardstyle.

Yuck. Well, if the majority of people is using that style it might also explain why locations go unnoticed, since the right side of a webpage, let alone bottom right generates the least attention from viewers.

that would be cool. Then again I hope folk are not so lazy they cant move their eyes around the screen to find the user location that is automatically placed there already.

Seriously though..... why all the trouble... the answer is on you screen already. Just open your eyes. Just got to get people to put their location in their profile. That part of the profile is placed somewhere on the screen near to every post they wrote.

If everybody filled in their profiles, then it wouldnt be a problem, so I think a flag would be good. But I think it would have to be mandatery on posting. Most of the new members signing on just put their web name. I think it would be good for the site to see all the different countries that contibute to the site. I have a multi satelite 5000 chanells, if you do a scan on a satelite 1000 exta channels appear, without the flags it would take some sorting through.

not discounting flag idea at all... just your point is not valid. Folk would also need to sign up for the Flag thing no different than them needing to update their location on this board. Also, realistically while it sounds nice and looks good the flag page (assuming its a separate site and not an addition to phpbb) will be less user friendly requiring clicking to another page and then hunting for the user name on that pages database to find the country that user is from (or something similar to that). Where if we just encourage more to finish their registration pages here and including country in the location fill out area .... this will result in a more user friendly result because the country will then be posted right next to the post instead of on a separate page. Again assuming the flag thing you talking about is a separate site and does not actually print right into phpbb post.

I dont know of the technicalities of putting a flag or not , but if you look at the last two pages of members 127, only 37 have written anything, I rest my case.

hopefully this thread has gotten more people to start updating their profiles by adding country. It promted me to add my country... so hopfully others follow.

Admin- if I'm not mistaken in phpbb you have the ability to do a mass mailing of membership. Might be a good time to do that including a note requesting members to add country and generic town/city location to their profiles? Just a thought.

I have to ask! What's the population of this board?
How many member?
Just Curious!
I like the folks here but don't get to spend as much time here as I'd like.

And as for the Original Topic.
I think I must be a visionary!
That or it's another one of those arrogant Texas Things again..... :D
It wouls be nice to know where everyone is located on this Planet.

On one of my other Boards I hang out at, we have been thinking of all retiring and finding a designated town in Costa Rica to move to.
What a Hoot that would be. 200,00 KLR's in one Central American Town.

Currently there are about 220 people on here who've posted something to the board. There is quite a lot of people on the member list who have not posted anything -

https://www.dieselbikeforum.com/memberlist.php

I guess we'll need to do a cleanup sometime though often people sign up and then start posting quite a bit of time later when they are feeling a bit more confident about their projects or whatever.

Note that location has been added to the signup process as a mandatory field so new members should have locations added when they sign up.

Can I also ask that everyone checks their email address on their profile as some addresses bounce when the board tries to message people.

I think the ideas that have been put forward are good ones cos it's nice to know where my fellow 'dieseleers' are spread about this lovely world of ours. On the reference to us all up sticks and moving to one town together, Venezuela looks a good place to live, beautiful beaches, plenty of fuel for quite a long time. Anyone else got any ideas?
