Hey builders, I was at Pick-n-Pull (a take-it-apart-yourself auto recycler) in Calgary today, and they have a Smart diesel in the "showroom" that they are parting out. Engines at P-N-P go for $300. No guarantees on the engine of course, but it could be a pretty cheap beginning to a pretty cool build a-la Neil's Tiger. It's a little more than I want to tackle now, but I would love to see that engine in a bike around here.
Cheers,
Phil

First, I'd need crazymanneil to tell me what other electronics would need to come with the engine. I know that if you try to swap a TDI VW from one car into another, the instrument cluster has to go with the engine or nothing runs...

I think a few of us are hoping the Crazyman will write up his projet to give everyone some idea of what's involved with this kind of build

I just perused some old posts in the "Common Rail" section. Wow, I had no idea guys like Heiko are to the stage of building computers for these engines. The possibilities of the newer engines are pretty neat, but there is something quite comforting about having a cable that pulls a lever that physically adjusts how much fuel goes to the cylinders and thus how much power the engine makes. Also, building a bike seems daunting enough without having to figure out computer boxes and electronic throttles etc. I'm not a luddite, really, but my hat goes off to the pros who figure these things out. Having said that, a Tiger with a 40+hp 800cc turbo diesel will be neat to see.

The electronics/computer of the smart does scare me. The $5,000+ USD for a Dihatsu (Briggs) or Lombardini (Kohler) scares me more.

There's a Lombardini (Kohler) on Ebay at the moment. Has a reserve, but of course you don't know what it is. Currently at $305. It'll be interesting to see what it goes for, or if the reserve is met.
