Just when the weather turns cold too.
Front engine mount snapped at the weld.

The one with 120,000 miles on it...
If it was the Tiger the engine would hit the deck with quite some force - it's a heavy bugger.

phew. Didn't think it would be a mistake with the conversion on the tiger (its great work) but worried for a sec it was the original frame...
Still pretty crap tho. Time to get the welder out?

I've been missing old Sluggy since the engine mounting busted and I can't find my spare despite turning the garage upside down.
Nowt for it but out with the welding gear and as it's 8mm thick steel stick welding has to be the way to go.
The end results ain't pretty but they sure are strong, just waiting for the hammerite paint to go off a bit before refitting and then we are back on the road again.

Well the welding is holding up......
Headlamps gone on holiday with a direct short circuit, nice ride home in the dark yesterday.

At least it keeps you busy Although I honestly expected you would retire sluggy and you would start using the tiger for daily commute.
'92 Enfield + Hatz 1B40: street legal, weld up stainless exhaust, check engine rpm and change final drive sprocket.

The headlamp failure turned out to be the bulb, somehow failed as a direct short circuit.
But guess who checked all the wiring first - DOH!
Taking the Tiger to work through London traffic would be like taking a supertanker down a canal.

Folk do commute with their Tigers daily all over the world thru heavy traffic. Just get out there and learn to ride it. Yep, it's top heavier than your use too. Oh well, you were once use to a nothing more than a bicycle too. You'll figured this out too if you want.
Suggest you hang out more on the Tiger board and/or Advanture riders. Folk their sling their adveture bikes like a heavy tiger all over the place. Catching up on stories their might give you a different insight

Hi Dave,
Sorry to hear about ol' Sluggy, glad he's up and percolating again.
In staring at the picture of the broken weld, it looks like it wasn't too good of penetration. Looks like the weld was just stuck on the surface, if it was a "good" weld it would have either cracked through the gully of the weld or the base metal, not just peeled away from the pieces. But, it's hard to tell sometimes- I've done many welds that looked really nice and "professional" but were absolute crap!
But, it did last almost 100,000 miles, right? If it had "perfect" near 100% penetration the weld wouldn't have broken, something else would have let go first!

So Dave, if it's anything like that, what you are saying is Sludgy's handlebars are more narrow? The torque on the Tiger would tempt you too much to push folks out of the way.Crazymanneil wrote:I always liked this vid of London commuting -

Yeah "keep your lane" isn't used much in Europe, in Holland you are supposed to drive on the right most lane (you can be fined for "staying left"). When I was in Warsaw the driving is much different, you can overtake on either side as long as the road you are travelling on is 3 lanes wide or something similar.
In Germany there is "Freie Fahrt" on certain stretches of highway, which means no speed limit. I suspect folks in ordinary cars keep to the right most lane on those types of roads as well

It's all down to manouverability, with a bike the size of the Tiger with bars set at exactly van mirror height there's a lot of wiggling to do and it's a heavy bike to wiggle.
Sluggy is light and the bars sit exactly between car mirror and van mirror height - perfect.
Must dig out the video camera.
