Enclosed final chainguard for Enfield Bullet

Post by GeoffK »

Does anyone know where I can get a chain guard that totally encloses the drive chain to the back wheel of an Enfield Bullet? I want to take my diesel Enfield into the desert and I would like to keep the sand off the chain if possible.

Thanks

Geoffrey

I want this too, since we have 500 days of rain a year in Holland. OK, I might be exagerating just a little, but I swear it can be overcast all day, until I go outside... it will start to rain.

A friend of mine suggested to look for closed chaincases for Zundapp/MZ/old 2-stroke something/mopeds, since they were running the chain in an oilbath? Well, I'm sure someone who actually knows about this will fill in the blanks.

As a reference, I found a stainless steel one for a Zundapp, 200 euro. I will pass for now.

Well, there seems no doubt that enclosed chain guards for the Enfield did exist. Is there any hint in the German text to say where you can still get one Sphere?

Thanks

Geoff, the text says it's a cheap part from ebay, and then modified. I'm sure the original chain guard will require modification as well. It won't allow you to run the chain in an oilbath, but will greatly improve the lubrication intervals and stop most dirt from reaching the chain. Well, that's what the text says anyway.

woooooooo.... never seen that. Why don't modern bikes have them especially dual sports.

So how does the front of it work? As in how can it move with the swing of the rear wheel

I would imagine very much the same as the chain guard with just the top half? Can't check for you as my bike is disassembled, but when I get around to it I will report back in this topic.

Im assuming the Enfield one is closed in front as well as in back thus the front has to have some means of rotating yet stay sealed from water. Thus my question.

While my Enfield knowledge is still developing, I imagine that you have to think more along the lines of "shielded" than "sealed".

I do not know if the Enfield was "shielded" or had a "sealed" chain case.

I was going by the post a few above that recommended a source for retrofitting a closed chaincase for the Enfield along with the pictures up above with a closed chain case on what appears to be labeled as a dieselized Enfield.
