how much did you spend?

Post by TedV »

Coach's post on the 800 Dnepers needing to be moved got me wondering. How much have you spent on the bike for your diesel build? If you don't mind saying. I understand if you don't want to say. Some things are fun to do and if the other bills are getting payed, who cares what it cost because you have a smile on your face. I've noticed some worn out bikes still going for stupid money around here is why I ask.

economics must factor into part of it. Course, I've done some costly stuff just to be different.

OK...Donor Ural bike was £62 (v.rusty and lived outside for 20 years). Daihastu Charade was £40 (MOT failure) but in Scotland, so add £200 for delivery. Engine and gearbox plates I had laser cut - about £10 each. High ratio FD gears were about £80 (from memory - may be wrong) and high ratio 4th gear was about £40. Add say £100 for assorted Ural bits which came from my stock, but which can't fairly be thought of as available free to this project. All the rest was out of the skip at work...makes £542. Oh, and a zillion hours of time...

I got two late Mid Nineteen-Nineties Triumph Tigers for around 2grand with shipping both sorta non runners. Friend (locomotive breath here) drove them over to me for a fair price cause my transport plans fell thru when an animal became roadkill and took out my radiator in the process. (My own VW Golf and a trailer was my orginal transport plan)

so that's (round about cost in USD)

Bikes w/shipping....2 grand
Ultima tranny............550
3" belt drive and clutch.500
*engine............. 5 grand or there abouts new. NOT YET PURCHASED

*Used Diahatsu extremely rare in US . Im stopped cold with insuffcient funds to move forward

I live in Holland. This is my list. It might be incomplete, but not on purpose: I will update it if I remember what I left out

I'm not counting fuel cost and vehicle depreciation of my car driving around, partly because I didn't keep track, and partly because the cost incurred wasn't solely spent on getting the bike modified. Should not exceed 200 euro so far. Currently I'm too lazy to calculate a grand total, but I will do so after I have rested. Watch this space.

Ball park figure for grand total so far: 1600 euro.

Badly neglected Enfield 350 with valid registration: 500 euro
Hire van to transport of bike to my shed: 70 euro
Transfer ownership of vehicle at post office: xx euro (I forget)
Suspend road tax/insurance for one year: xx euro ( I think like 12?)
Hatz 462 from the UK off ebay: 550 euro (have to verify with paypal)
New tyres from Germany: 120 euro (Avon and Heidenau)
Powder coat rims, hubs and 3 small parts: 110 euro
Primary drive sprocket and 1210 1" taperlock: 30 euro (sprocket wasn't new, would have to look up bill)
Hatz manual for 1Bxx series (English): 35 euro (shipping more expensive than manual itself, sigh)
4x 6203 2RS 1x 6005 2RS: 17 euro (SNF and SKF, 6203 are actually EE which translates to 2RS, bloody Frenchies)
3 cables (break, clutch, gas), bearing balls, flimsy aluminium cap for steering column: 20 euro
Wheels spoked with stainless steel spokes: 200 euro

Still to buy/spend:

2x inner tube: 20 euro?
2x rim lining: 10 euro?
Powdercoat frame: likely 150 euro or more.
New nut for steering column: x euro (mine is so badly rusted, you'd be emberrased)
Crack gearbox open (inspect why Nanko shakes head in dismay when he turns it): xx euro
Prepare gearbox to run on oil Anorak_ian style (without leaking, yes): 50 euro?
Battery
Alternator/stator: xx euro (I called Hatz, but I forget. Hint: don't buy 1B40 handstarters)
Counterbalance: xxx euro (think 140ish, optional)
Have it recertified for road usage: 44 euro (ish)
Stainless steel nuts (nylock) and bolts: 50 euro?

Free:

Advice on a friendly diesel forum (priceless actually)
Enfield Bullet manual (thanks Jan)
Some steel for the subframe (thanks dad)
Welding (thanks Nanko)
Coolest fuel tap ever with return (was free, but I declined if I couldn't reimburse. Thanks Nanko)
Short silencer for Bullet (thanks neighbour's brother in-law)
Silencer bends for short silencer (same person)

Sold petrol engine to cut cost: 200 euro (less than 5000 km to it probably, odometer was advanced to trick Dutch customs)
'92 Enfield + Hatz 1B40: street legal, weld up stainless exhaust, check engine rpm and change final drive sprocket.
