Gearbox choice

Post by sbrumby »

Just a little snipit I read in latest classic motorcycle mechanics. It talks about the CB1100F & the CB900 haveing a HI/LO range these were nicknamed the 10 speed. It seems these were only available in the States.
May be a good choise for a diesel .

I briefly looked in to this gearbox some time ago, the info that I got (may be wrong) was the top gear ratio is 1 to 1 (same as any gear box). I think it was one set of low gears for mountain use etc and the other for normal use.
I suppose the gears could be mixed about to get a low 1st and 2nd gear, with a larger gearbox sprocket this would push 4th gear up and 5th gear in to over drive, which is what a big diesel needs.
The problem with a lot of Jap bikes is upping the sprocket size is difficult as the chain just hits one of the engine studs or some other obstacle. Could always down size the rear sprocket though.

Interesting to see if anyone will do it.

Gentlmen,
I've noticed that here in the States alot of atvs use a high/low gearbox. Alot of the ones in the mid 90's were 2 wheel drive and even had reverse (not that you need it, but hey why not) these were already set up for CVT transmisions also. I'v e seen a number of them on ebay and you could probebly even use the CVT covers if you could get the spacing right. (they even have a provision for cooling the CVT).

I was thinking that if you coud optimize your finial drive ratio you could use Low to make the bike snappy around town and High for Highway cruising and Milage.

Would be curious what you're thoughts on this would be.

I'll see if I can find out the ratios on some of these
