Engine mountings

Post by Mouse »

Is three any preference to using rubber mountings or solid mountings when mounting the engine?

Good question, will be interesting to see what the others say. Only thing with rubber mounting is that the "give" could throw the primary drive out of alignment while engine is running. Of course you could mountup the gearbox to the engine and rubber mount the lot but then what about final drive?

Would think the belt drive would ge forgiving enough for rubber mounting the engine and not an aux. tranny?

Possible resource for mounts would be an old auto tranny mount.

I would say solid mount an engine unless high vibs are a real problem, then rubber mounts would be needed as high vibrations will crack the frame etc.

Many engines "even diesels" have counter balancers which take a lot of the bad vibs out.

Remember if you rubber mount your engine be weary of cracking exhausts and other items if mounted solidly to frames etc

That's what I was thinking but I was worried about stress fractures in the frame as a result but no one appears to have suffered that. Crazyneil also pointed out the resulting drive train alignment problems if the engine position was not fixed.
Looks like its going to be solid mounted now.

There has been an increase in stress cracks after mounting a diesel as far as I understand it. Same for those who have attached various other things to bikes like trailers and sidecars.

hard to tell if cracks were do to vibrations or amateur welds etc.

I once had a sidecar that was amateurishly fitted and one by one the struts failed because the stress in them was wrong and they developed fractures. I eventually replaced them all with something more sturdy and angled differently and it was OK for several years before I dismantled it to sell. I strength tested my first complete sidecar build with an test load far cheaper than sand bags and its proved rock solid and has made it around Scotland twice without falling off. :D

I also pull trailers but the less said about that the better

Well some diesels tend to vibrate quite a bit, there's at thread on the german mz-forum.com site
