Re: Yamaha diesel bike in the pipeline?
Well spotted Neil At last, firm evidence that one of the big four from Japan is considering a Diesel powered motorcycle. We can only hope that this will spur the others into action.
Interesting as to why Yamaha should choose to look at a four cylinder bike when the likes of Ricardo and AVL have gone the 3 cylinder route. Easier to turbo-charge
Just downloaded the patent itself
We'll have to do some more research on this me thinks...

Re: Yamaha diesel bike in the pipeline?
Hmm, dunno. I've been told by the KLR ppl that it is pretty complicated squeezing a turbo & intercooler into a bike frame. Yamaha have spent time and money and now reckon they're happy with the results I can see why they've taken out a patent to protect their efforts. I'll have to read it and see exactly what they've patented.
It's not this years though but 2008 I think. All good stuff though

Very nice find Neil !
Inline 4cyl turbo diesel, now knowing Yamaha engineering it would have to be a real kick butt bike. Hope the economic B.S doesn't stop them from going ahead with it.
Yep! Had to download the patent too

Re: Yamaha diesel bike in the pipeline?
Its interesting. From a quick look it seems to focus on intercooler, radiator and fuel cooler locations. Seems to be plenty of room in my bike for the turbo though I can understand the issues with locating intercooler!

Re: Yamaha diesel bike in the pipeline?
It all seems to be about the positioning of the intercooler TDC above the engine for maximm airflow. They've also covered themselve's as regards using a V4. Maybe we are seeing the first glimmer of something from the far east. I hope so

Re: Yamaha diesel bike in the pipeline?
Yeah looking at the patent it seems they have taken a lot of serious consideration where to put the radiator, intercooler and Turbo. That V4 looks a treat to, hopefully they will see the need to offer these bikes abroad.
Wonder if they do come out if I'll see them down under, many European motors that are diesel never get down here, to many power heads down in OZ maybe !!!
