I'll take measurements on the length, post pictures tomorrow. I am concerned that George is biting off more than he can chew by using a 4X6 trailer loaded with two Tigers, being pulled by a 2000 VW TDI. I want you to be safe George, that's my first concern. It’s over 1,000 miles one way, 100-110 degree weather, and it’s a good pull over Flagstaff.

Also maybe we can take a poll; I've offered to take George to HDT in Hesperia while he is here, only 40 miles away. We can post questions for George to ask HDT, I'll just stand back and be silent. Any thoughts? How about it George?

After endless hours of phone conversations over a period of over two years talking Diesel motorcycles, I'd really like to see George on a Diesel Bike, I’d like to help him in anyway I can. I do look forward to actually meeting you George. If you want, we can pull anything off you don't need (engines) as to lighten your load.

Like I say, I’ll help in anyway I can.

George, do you have an exhaust gas temperature gauge on your Jetta? Have you done any modifications to it? Any EGR soot blocking the intake? I would try towing at night. Every bit of lower temp will help. How much to rent a small U-haul box truck?

I was surprised by the amount of air drag just a lil CB250 has, felt like pulling a boat anchor. I live in Knoxville TN, went to Nashville to pick up a CB250. Hauling it on a 3 bike open trailer, about 4.5’x 7’. There are a few hills, and I ended up driving by the exhaust temps keeping speed about 65mph.

I have a 98 Jetta TDI with Upsolute 205 chip and PP520 injectors. Usually get 46-48mpg. empty trailer at 75-85mph (was running late) 39mpg, 65mph with the CB250, 31mpg. Eventually will see what Airtech Streamlining has to fit it to help the CB get thru the air.

welll...... may have just run into a dalay... pun intended.

When it rains it pours... !@#$#%^ raccoon in the middle of my lane completely unavoidable just after midnight tonight. Moments later warning lights on the dash go off. Pull off at my office only a mile away (home was another 30 miles away) and whala.... coolant all over the ground.

Will have to sleep here at the office "again" and wait till morning to see what the coon took out.

just to chip in. engine is easy enough to remove and pretty heay so could be worthwhile. just make sure to keep whatever bits you need eg bolts.

Like I've offered before, I have the means to bring you the bikes at cost plus. This won't be my first rodeo.

dang, that sucks. At least the deer crossed 100 yards up the road from me this morning on the bike. Check the raccoon didn't take out the AC also.

What are you doing with the 2nd bike again? I know someone who will work on VW's for bike parts.
good luck getting Jetta fixed, hope it's simple n easy, but sounds like your luck is just like mine.

Coon broke the driver bottom corner of the radiator. Replacement 160ish, labor another 300ish :(

Dave (locomotive breath) Im assuming I get about twice the mpg you get in your truck is why I was thinking of going up there to get them myself.

No I do not have an EGT gauge. It does have a kerma TDI chip but its just a corrected tune back to European OEM before detuning by VW to meet USA emmisions. NO upgraded injectors or anything else.

Just checked the cost of a rental truck. If I did that I would have no money left to pay for fuel. (20/day and 0.60/mile)

I'll get about 17mpg with my truck pulling the trailer, From Barstow CA to Fort Worth is 1300 miles one way, so 2600/17 = 153 gallons of fuel @ $2.85 = $436 plus past due and a little for expenses. Give me a call please, I try calling you but all I get is ???

I measured the trailer this morning, your 4X6 trailer might be ok for one bike. Notice the tape measure is at 4 feet including the 2" for the tape measure. The rear wheels would be right on the rear edge, as the the tigers rear wheels on my trailer (8ft) are 2 feet from the edge and the bikes are at a sight angle.

Let me know,
Dave

Sheesh guys,

I know it's none of my business, but I hauled 2 Harleys from Virginia up to Mass. in the back of a rental Ford Explorer. All it took was a few hours and a box of wrenches. It was a little bit of a tight squeeze with 2 of us in the front seats and the disassembled bikes in the back, but we made it OK. Didn't even scratch the rental. Only had a couple of hundred miles on it when we left. Luckily not a drop of oil on the carpets either, especially considering the nature of the cargo! You could strap down most of the heavy stuff in the trailer and remove the Jetta's rear seat and put the small, lighter stuff there. Maybe even pull the passenger seat if not bringing company.

I agree with driving at night, and if it is still hot even during the late hours I'd avoid lugging that Jetta up the hills. Just drop a gear, move over, and let the impatient squirrels pass. And, check the pressure relief valve in the coolant tank cap is OK and is not clogged (don't ask me why). And send some of that heat and sunshine up this way! It's been in the record lows here all June and rain all but 2 days in the last month. So much for global warming.

That Jetta radiator isn't all that hard to change, just take your time. Pay somebody else $300 to do it and they'll probably screw something up anyways. That must have been one heck of a raccoon. We've an invasion of migrant moose up here, saw one a few weeks ago that totaled an F250. Hate to hit one of those beasts with my Jetta!

Tigers are rare up here, I saw my first one about 2 weeks ago. I don't know of any Triumph dealers locally. Looks like a cool bike.

Just my 2 cents, (that's about what it's worth!)

Good luck and have a good 4th of July!

Bikes are about an hour from me now. Loco.... motivebreath  and I talked about it and he just hooked up his truck to da trailer and hit the road.

Way my luck had been lately figured it was best to just have a shop do the radiator. One cause its not technically my car yet and should be done by someone who will warentee their work.

Ya got a point there about the radiator....... just your luck something else (unrelated) would go wrong but you'd be blamed! I hope that raccoon was good eatin', that was expensive roadkill

Good luck with those tigers and I hope you get more time to work on your bike(s) than I've had lately. This has been one crazy, wet, busy summer so far here. Hope to start fixing my Jetta (head gasket/warped head) next week then on to the bike :D Woo-hooooooooo!
