Well it looks like the heat got to Sluggy's old 4 speeder, I arrived home yesterday to find my home made elephant poo grease exiting the 'box at a rapid rate.

The box was way overfull of lube so this is prob. the main cause.

I had only jetwashed the bike last Sunday too, now I have a gearbox leak and a nice drippy fuel leak from the brass tap.

Can't complain really - it's summer at last!

BTW I saw my first 'Darwin Awards' candidate rider of the summer yesterday; baggy vest top, shorts and flip flops; 80+mph on the A13 in heavy traffic.

hey dave, does your box have a vent? should stop the leak.

No vent but it was kind of obvious why it was leaking when I took the outer cover off.

All but one of the inner screws had fallen out or loosened off.

Repeat the mantra - "Loctite is my friend"

I found a bit of oil inside my outer cover the other day but couldn't figure out how it got there from inside. Anyway, the box appears to have stopped leaking at the sprocket end which is a relief. And yes, there is oil in it still. Whether that will be the case after Friday's run up the M1 to Utoxeter is another question I just hope I don't have a re-occurance of my gearbox probs. It will only happen if the loctite behind the gearbox cog gives out on me

Must be the season for gearboxes some time this week I shall be operating on the enfield...If I can get away from Pergola building ( using 8"x4" timbers ) Not easy in this 38c heat, thank god for the pool

You'll get a little oil coming through the spot where the clutch pushrod goes through mate, there is no seal on that ball bearing, just a oil throwing thingy. I had the same thing happen, and that was the culprit. If you lube the clutch cable it also will run into that casing area.

I think Stu did fit a set of sealed bearings.......

It's prob the stuff shoved into the pushrod hole through the shaft, if you think about it there is a path from the primary case through to the gearbox outer cover.

Then again he has belt primary drive so no oil in there either.

I had a look at my pushrod tips when securing the inner cover - loverly indentation in both ends; supposed to be hardened? not likely!

Hitchcocks do a roller bearing ended pushrod kit,, I was half wondering about fitting one myself in the hope it would reduce clutch drag and make finding the real neutral possible on weekdays as well as on sunday mornings
