Daihatsu engine

Post by johnfireball »

Hi all,
Maybe someone can enlighten me about whether all diesel engines using the mechanical type pump have a cold starting valve to vary the timing when cold. I can see no sign of such on my engine. It has a cutoff solenoid and what looks like a rev counter pickup on the pump. The reason I ask is that its very smokey on startup and eventually clears after a few minutes. Its a Nippondenso pump fitted to a 1992 1000cc Daihatsu turbo diesel engine. Perhaps it's the diesel fuel I used as it came from the central heating tank. Any input appreciated.
Thanks John.

Central heating fuel does not have the lubricants added that you need to lubricate your injection pump.

I'd avoid using this fuel, or add a good lubricant - rapeseed oil or rapeseed biodiesel is a great lubricant at low blend levels.

You might well find proper diesel does not smoke.

Thanks for the input guys much appreciated, I also believe from internet surfing that the 5w/40 synthetic oil I used is too thin and seeping past the turbo & valve seals when resting so causing initial smoking, will change to 15w/40 semi synthetic.
Thanks John.
