Not sure where I'm going with this one yet but after searching for cheap local small capacity diesels on ebay for ages I spotted something I could not leave behind. A 1995 1.9 Golf engine that was apparently going unnoticed. Got it for a grand total of £21 + going 25 miles to the next town to pick it up.
I've got two potential doner bikes to play about with. One is a virtually complete 1200 Bandit with seized engine and the other is a Dnepr with BMW gearbox, transmission and wheel but has totally U/S forks and a dismantled engine.
Anyone on the forum with experience of using this sort of engine??

I ended up in a similar situation. (This was before I decided to start building diesel bikes.)
I found this.
It’s a 1500cc Isuzu I Mark Turbo Diesel.
I found an 89 I Mark in great condition.
And logic got the better of me, and I installed it in the sedan for those days when the weather is not co-operating.
I am getting 42 -45 mpg out of it. The Air Conditioning works great, after all I live in Texas, so A/C is important. And it’s nice to be warm and dry. It’s my grocery getter!
Since then the diesel bike bug had bit me and several other motorcycle diesel projects have found their way into the shop. But, this engine just begged to be put in a car. The Isuzu 4 cyl Diesel was just too big for anything smaller.
BTY, it registered here in Texas without a hitch.
I have 2 Daihatsu/Briggs & one Honda 3 cyl diesel engines waiting for the right bike frames. So the Turbo Diesel I Mark was a plus.
Here's a shot of it after I finished the build.
Do you guys have any Golf Pickups over there? A diesel parts gettter would be great. But, your trailer behind your Beemer Hack is a great idea.
Waiting anxiously to see what you do with it.

I've owned a couple of VW cars that had a 1.9 indirect injection engine, run well on neat vegetable oil with a few modifications.
There is also some details of bikes using the same engine at http://www.dieselbike.net/vw.htm

Re: Just bought a Golf 1.9 engine
Have you weighed that badboy at all? I'd be interested to know from a curiousity point of view just. I was trying to get weight info for some other VW tdi engines. I got some stuff off wikipedia but no references as to how accurate it is or if it includes accessories like alternator etc.

Re: Just bought a Golf 1.9 engine
Hey mouse, nice engine! Is that an indirect 1.9 or a TDI? I've had lots of good luck with the old 1.6 IDI VW's sold here in the US up to 1993. The later TDI engines sold here in the US seem a bit similar, but more complicated with electronic injector pump controls.
Visited the local VW dealer last week to look at the newest diesel. That thing is so complicated and full of gadgets I got a headache looking at it. I like my simple, uncluttered VWs.
I have a 1985 Jetta and a 1991 Rabbit Pickup, Caddy to the rest of the world. The Jetta has 500,000 miles, with 300,000 miles on the engine I "borrowed" out of the pickup. Am now in the process of rebuilding the Jetta with the pickup soon to follow. First engine died due to a bad injector spray pattern burning a hole in the head and piston, the second due to a blown head gasket. Both could have been prevented, the guy I bought the pickup from ran it with low coolant but I still got about 150,000 miles out of the engine!
Is that Quonset Hut type building your bike garage? I'd love to have that in my back yard. Looks great and I'd take the dog, too!
Good luck with the engine and keep us posted on what you do with it.

Re: Just bought a Golf 1.9 engine
I know what you are on about. I'm doing some work on a Mk5 Turbo Diesel Astra that included removing the engine. I was expecting some elektricky but not 27 (Twenty Seven) multi pole connectors going to the engine and thats not including simple stuff like starter and alternator feeds!! I would be haggling for the redundant engine but dont have the resources, motivation or money to sort out a stand alone control system for it.Visited the local VW dealer last week to look at the newest diesel. (Runs out to shed to find bathroom scales)Have you weighed that badboy at all?
That was easier said than done. My electronic bathroom scales are activated by tapping them with your toe, they then auto zero and give you about 5 seconds to get on them and stand still before displaying a static reading. So it was sack truck ready with engine on it and scales in position. A tap of the toe and then lowering engine gently onto them so as not to squash the scales flat all in 5 seconds.
Average measurement over three attempts 133.5kg
Sack trolley weighs 7.0kg
So the engine is 126.5kg give or take the accuracy of a cheap bathroom scales.
That's the bare engine ie Flywheel + alternator + fuel pump and water pump attached, no manifolds, no steering pump no mounting bracketery and the oil drained.
The scales max out a 136kg which is something I checked after weighing the engine
Whilst I'm at it I have a spare flywheel and clutch which weigh 10.8kg
Hope this is useful
I'm looking for some accurate power torque / power curves for it but having no luck

Re: Just bought a Golf 1.9 engine
THanks for that Mouse! Your bathroom scales sound very similar to mine in the way they work, although mine live in the garage now because we would rather not know what weight we are
The weight you quoted sounds about right. It makes me think the weights on wikipedia for the 3 cyl 1.4tdi are probably a bit on the high side. (it says 127kg or something like that). Perhaps that weight is including all ancillaries or something.
For any tdi engine info the following site is the place to go -

Re: Just bought a Golf 1.9 engine
Best I can see in the picture, judging from the fuel pump it looks like an IDI not a TDI. VWdiesel.net has a pretty good forum for the IDI’s. The US never got the IDI 1.9, only the 1.6 NA and turbo, plus 1.9 TDI. I have heard the 1.9IDI puts out 68 HP. If you can find the engine code on the block that might help figure out what you have. 1Y perhaps?? Code is usually stamped into a flat spot on the block, right below the head, between cylinders 3 and 4. Stock or slightly modified they will last forever if you use good oil, keep the coolant fresh, and don’t overheat it.
