remove petrol engine from Enfield frame
Can you just remove the petrol engine from a 90's Enfield frame, or will the bike collapse on itself when you do?
I need to make a mockup for the subframe so I can have something welded. Usually I resort to http://www.enfielder.com/ but apparently that site is down and has been for some time now.

Re: remove petrol engine from Enfield frame
So here's a pic of the block that needs to come out. I have encircled 3 bolts that I have heard need to be removed. Below is also a set of instructions I found on the web. Step XIII through XV are unclear to me.
- What are the front engine plates?
- What is the stud securing the rear engine plate to the frame?
- Which way do you slide the engine?
Also, do you remove the 3 bolts I encircled entirely? With a screwdriver and hammer or something? I'm worried that I'm going to damage something

1. Removal of the Engine from the Frame
i. Disconnect alternator leads.
ii. Disconnect the spark plug cap, suppressor cap.
iii. Turn off petrol tap and disconnect the fuel pipe.
iv. Remove carburettor assy. along with throttle cable.
v. Remove the air filter assy.
vi. Remove the exhaust pipe and silencer.
vii. Disconnect the engine steady bolt.
viii. Remove the rear chain.
ix. Remove the footrest (L.H.).
xi. Support the engine on a suitable box or wood block.
xii. Remove the centre stand and the stand stop.
xiii. Remove the front engine plates and the small bolt fixing the stand spring bracket and fix rear mudguard.
xiv. Remove the stud securing the rear engine plate to the frame.
xv. Slide out the engine.

Re: remove petrol engine from Enfield frame
I have removed a respectable amount of bolts, the centre stand and the exhaust. The block isn't out yet, because I can't persuade the final drive chain to come off. I'll see about making a tool.

Re: remove petrol engine from Enfield frame
Ok here goes:
All the white ones need to be removed, but get the bike on a decent paddock stand and strap it down, I'm serious; it will fall over when you start pulling out the motor.
You can get away with less, it will be obvious why after the first time you do it as the gearbox just rests on the support stud and can be lifted off but the smaller stud goes through the bottom of the engine so needs to come out.
I would suggest you get a mate to help if possible.
The main swingarm nut I've marked with yellow should really be replaced with the proper large nut, about 50mm across as this spreads the load to the plate better.

Re: remove petrol engine from Enfield frame
Cheers Dave. I had to call it quits because of ominous skies. And low and behold it's pouring.
Hopefully I can get it done tomorrow:
do
18 °C | 6 °C
About the paddock stand: I have noticed that the bike is pretty unstable right now. To unscrew some of the badly corroded nuts I put the bike on its side. Good thing I have a big washing machine tub under it, because the block started spilling oil. Unfortunately I will have to go about it differently. Perhaps prematurely removing the front wheel has something to do with it

Re: remove petrol engine from Enfield frame
I'm sure glad that I don't have to put it back in, because it was a pain in the you know where to remove it. Solo. Without a front wheel. No straps. What surprises me is the number of nuts in annoying spots.
Thanks a lot for the pointers.

Re: remove petrol engine from Enfield frame
It was a beautiful sunny day today A perfect opportunity to take a walk with the family... wait!
Scratch that, there's a frame I need to strip
I'm genuinely surprised by the amount of metric nuts I encountered. A lot of 13, 15, 18 and 24. Unfortunately I killed/nicked/dented/tore 2 bearing races. Seems they were as sturdy as tin cans
