first malfunction

Post by arnaud »

Just after 30. K. it seems that i have a first breakdown.

I think the regulator is loosing it.
The voltage goes(with the rpm-range) up to 12,3V, and then drops below 11.8 and lower.

Since i'm not sure of electrical components since an ural 6V mystery i am asking these basic questions..
The genny has a permanent magneto, is 12V and 2 wires are coming out leading the the regulator. ( i tried to measure something from these wires but didn't get a reading)
I went to a car-parts shop and they told me that is impossible.
A Hella regulator cannot be used because these regulate by reducing the voltage to the regulating coil(which is here a permanent magnet)
and something about fase's..they told me..
Can someone tell me how many fases it has (2?)
and an estimate of the output?
Oh yes, it;s concerning a 418 yanmar clone

update;
2-fase genny, need an earth-regulating regulator (which disconnects at too low voltage, and sends excess voltage to earth, right?

Voltage Regulators

Post by Diesel Dave »

This is an easy one - you need a single phase motorcycle rectifier/regulator - or a Yanmar , Lombardini etc.

But.. it is a 2 fase genny?
I will mail some diesel engine dealers..
If i order one fro a german(or other) yanmar clone dealer the sendig is more expensive then the whole thing..

Rectifier Regulators

Post by Diesel Dave »

Single phase alternators have 2 wires, 3 phase have 3 wires.

Lots of single phase rectifier regulators about - look at the third item on this page:

http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffyelectrex.htm

Or any bike breakers should have loads of them.

And still i don't understand which one of the 2 regulators is fit for my bike..
The description is vageu, nothing about 2 fase permanent magnets.. if the zenerdiode is so wonderfull, why does it have to be replaced by the lower??

Regulators

Post by Diesel Dave »

Arnaud, your alternator has 2 wires coming out and going into the rectifier - Yes?

This means it's a single phase alternator, you ch=ould choose the heavy duty reg/rect if nervous about the power output.

ALL motorcycle alternators are permanent magnet types. (except BMW, Ural, that I know of)

Correct , also called parallel regulator.

Few components , if you are familiar with a solder iron its a one hour job to make your own

And on the two wires coming from the alternator you should measure an AC voltage , not DC !

Yes good old Ebay has single phase regulators for motorcycles amongst other devices (diesel gen sets etc) which are cheap and seem to work.

A;)

So, any 12V motorbiek regulator(exept ural, dnepr bmw guzzi) might work?
An mz regulator has 5 contacts, so thats not going to work i think.
Also i am told that this regulator turns the excess voltage to heath.. i don't think the other bike regulators iv'e seen work that way..?
