Normal for Enfields?

Post by visser »

Is it normal for Enfields to drip a bit of oil under the engine near where the chain is? Is there a chain oiler or something at work, or is this a serious concern that I need to take care of right away?

Normal

On some Enfields there is a crancase pressure relief valve called a duck bill near the point you indicate so it is normal. But in general they all leak a bit just keep an eye on the oil level and if it stays within acceptable limits accept the drip as a feature.

Hi,
Check that the sprocket nut has not loosened by wiggling it. If it has it will leak oil past the spacer. Believe me I know from experience.

leak

Remember if it is a four speed box and you have used oil instead of grease it will leak usually just live with it unless it is a gusher.

Speaking of which, Bob... I have not opened my gearbox yet, but I think it still contains grease.

If I switch from grease to oil, then I have to switch to a sealed bearing - is that correct?

On the other side.... the chain-gearbox... what came out was a light muddy coloured liquid, but I read this should be replaced either with a certain weight of oil or ATF, correct?

primary chaincase

Post by Cockney Bob »

If you had a muddy coloured liquid come out of the primary chaincase where the clutch is then you probably have a leaking seal around the gear box sprocket /clutch area of the primary chaincase and you had a mixture of oil and water making the muddy coloured residue.
Replace that seal and use ordinary monograde 50 oil. ATF is ok but expensive and no real advantage.

Yep, Cockney Bob is on the mark, I'd say water has been getting into the small hole in the oil fill nut or the O-Ring is letting water in etc. Not good for the components in the primary casing.

I'm the same as C.B, I use a 50W oil, just make sure it "Doesn't" contain any friction modifiers as your clutch will slip like mad and if really bad you won't be able to start the engine via the kick starter.

It's not unusual for Enfields to leak a little oil from the sprocket region.
