Re: The FrankenBrick Smart BMW build
The Lombardini was an LDW1003.
The Enfield now sports a Yanmar L100 clone of something like 450cc, lets just say they seem to be little Chinese pony's rather than stonking great Shire Horses with hairy feet.
I must see if the starter motor has a code on it.....certainly would save buying a new battery every 2 years.

I was talking with Dave Angel in the pub at Stafford bike show and it seems that MotoBatt batteries have phenominal CCA at expense of short life.Diesel Dave wrote:....certainly would save buying a new battery every 2 years.
2 years is the norm it seems.

There have been lots of complaints about Motobat quality going downhill in the past 2 years - it's rife on the Honda CB750 forums...

Re: The FrankenBrick Smart BMW build
Reading your cooling problems - mine just did the same thing (Daihatsu engine #2). Except it got hot on a run, poured rusty water over my left leg, and then stopped squirting it out and settled down again without overheating. I know my rad cap is dodgy - I have fingers crossed for this. Otherwise - I don't know. I think I may be running out of steam after 12 years, and perhaps it will be time to sell it all on and go back to TS250/1 power - still my most reliable vehicle, and the one which these days is never taxed.

Re: The FrankenBrick Smart BMW build
Dave on the spring starter, ages ago I did some investigation on this subject cant remember the company, eventually I got a price from them and the size was too big. The price would have bought 10 batteries. On the battery situation I think I wrote on this as well. Started with gel battery, on the big bike I have two both failed within a short time, they give no warning and go from 12v to zero. They give high outputs through having more plates in a given area separated by wading of some type but when they fail they fail. Lead acid usually gives plenty of warning.

Dave,
I'd love to see you mount one of these spring starters on your clone. Unfortunately, price and shipping are pretty far out there.

Those are cool. Not sure I would want that stud the handle goes onto stab into a leg if you had to lay the bike down though.

Re: The FrankenBrick Smart BMW build
It’s been a bit quiet on here for a while so I thought I would update you. I sold the bike about 4 years ago and it was bought by a guy who lives not that far away from me. Probably under an hour. He came to 1 of our bike meetings and he had removed the fairing from the front and was riding the bike everywhere. Done a lot of miles on it was really pleased with it.
And then a few years later I got a message it had been stolen. They knew where it was but for whatever reason they couldn’t get hold of it. Evidently some scumbags were riding round some woods. Very odd choice of bike to ride round woods IMHO
Next thing they were no longer riding it and you can see why below. We both wanted to cry.

Re: The FrankenBrick Smart BMW build
I was told about the fate of this build in a German carpark. Such a shame
Are any parts salvageable?

Re: The FrankenBrick Smart BMW build
The important parts such as the gearbox and final drive should be fine. The bell housing and engine mountings although the frame will need bending to accommodate the engine mountings in the same way that I did when I built it.
The exhaust should be okay and the adapter to turn the turbo and manifold upside down.
So all the hard and most of the “thinking” parts should be salvageable

Re: The FrankenBrick Smart BMW build
If he’s breaking it then I’d be interested in the final drive provided it’s got the new ring & pinion gears in it from the German guy.
Needs to fit my BMW K75 build.
Message me if so?
Cheers
